I am not in the habit of posting political or moral thoughts on Live-journal because I like my life in boxes and LJ is my Having Fun and Relaxing Box. However, while reading World magazine this morning I became so frustrated that I decided I'd share this with you all anyway. That way those of you on my side may humour me and those of you who disagree with me can call me as many names as you like. (I have even made this post public so that I may annoy as many people as possible.)
What has happened to our society when it becomes necessary to even consider a constitutional ban on gay marriage? Think about it. A constitutional ban on publicly recognized homosexuality. And we'll be excited if it passes! Call me a pessimist (as a matter of fact I am one), but the point is this. When it becomes necessary for us to fight this hard over something that was once so blatantly obvious, we have already lost the battle. We talk about standing fast, refusing to give up the ground, and as far I'm concerned we're delusional. We can't hold our ground, we have no ground. We gave up our ground years ago and now the task is to take it back. We won't take it back with a constitutional amendment. Do I want one passed? Yes. Do I think it will fix our problem? No. We will recover our ground when we have raised a generation of children who will raise a generation of children who will raise a generation of children who find homosexuality appalling and who find it so obviously appalling that an amendment to the highest law of this land will be superfluous.
WHY SHOULD WE BE EXCITED IF THIS PASSES? Yes, I'm losing my temper. This is not a time for rejoicing in our perseverance, this is a time for bursting into tears and falling on our knees. "Oh God, have mercy on us!" We never should have let it get this bad in the first place.
You may point to all the poll numbers that are supposed to be encouraging, but poll numbers change like a weather vane. The undeniable fact is that a constitutional ban on gay marriage has become necessary and this makes me sick. What parent would be proud of the job they had done if they had to make a rule forbidding the twenty year old to hit the baby upside the head? Not one parent I know of. We Christian adults are drinking spiritual milk by the gallon and are pretty darn proud of ourselves. I am here to tell all of you and myself to grow up.
