We use a baking soda and water mixture on sunburns on our horses, mixing it until its like a foamy paste... its temporary of course but it works well for our guys! Not sure about cortizone

Now that I think about it, that's what I used to do when I got bee stings as a kid. Interesting... Thanks for the suggestion. :)

This is going to sound a little crazy, but try 3 parts white vinegar to 1 part water. It has a wonderful cooling effect and will take swelling down quickly.

the thing about vinegar that's way more important than its cooling effect is the fact that it actually draws the venom [which is what causes the swelling and itchiness] out of the sting site. it also works well for mosquito bites, spider bites, etc.

I'm not sure if it will help the itching, but I've always used meat tenderizer (the seasoning, not the hammer thing) to help with bee stings. It takes the sting out immediately and seems to ease the swelling.

When I started reading your post I was confused as to why whacking your horse with a hammer studded with sharp pointy bits would help with bee stings. I got quite a funny mental image of someone chasing their pony around the field with one and yelling, "But I just want to help youuuu!"

And now I have the giggles at work.

Lol, I've learned to specify since I got stung riding one day, and went to get the meat tenderizer from my house and when I told my friend she wanted to know how hitting myself with the hammer went. But the seasoning really works. You can put it straight on or make a little paste out of it, but it works immediately.

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone! I think I'll try the cortizone first (since I already have some) and if that doesn't help, go from there. Thanks again!

You could also get the vet to come out and give her a prescription for azium or dex.
