This is basically a fun post. I want to know what smart/crazy/dumb "tricks" your horses pull that leave you scratching your head.
Want to know Cracker's?
She plays dead.
No, seriously. She lays on her side, has her eyes half open, mouth open with tongue hanging out and her legs raised - not resting on each other, but raised like rigor mortis has set in. If she's feeling kind she'll flick at ear or open an eye when you call her name otherwise you have to go up and check for breathing.
Damn pony is 24 and one of these days we're all going to be slapping her, "Cracker, stop playing dead!" and she really will be. My horse is cynical (like me) with an odd sense of humor so I know that will be her last "Hehe, dumb humans" moment. To say it drives me mad is an understatement.
Dumb me forgot to tell the barn owner where I moved her to and she decided to play dead while sunning herself in the round pen. Oops.
She's also figured out to flick her jolly lick toy onto a ledge in her stall for her munching pleasure. If you move it elsewhere, she won't touch it.
When she bowed her tendon, she would actually elevate that leg on rocks, mineral blocks, etc.
Also, with the post below, she too can untie quick releases.
If a horse cuts her off in the arena, she grabs the bit, passes them, and cuts them off. I call it "arena rage." An old barn of mine was very competitive and it wasn't uncommon for girls to do it purposely.
Sand hitting the ground poles or jumps when we used to jump caused her to slam on the brakes. She'd jump anything as long as sand didn't hit it. She'd also hop away from dressage letters if she sand hit them.
I remember my trainer saying she's too smart for her own good. And mine. She's only gotten smarter.
