After reading one of the 'helmet' post comments regarding how embarresed an old beat-up helmet made her as a kid, I wondered whether there was anything that mortified me or made me proud to wear when I was a kid

oh man... i remember getting my first helmet. i realllllllllly wanted one of the 'pretty velvet ones' even though my mom wanted to get me just a plastic one since i was just starting to ride. I'm pretty sure I wore it home. I loved that thing.
I got my first helmet used from a friend who was moving to Korea. I was 12, and I had to beg my parents because they didn't think a helmet was important! It seemed like a fine helmet at the time, but looking at it now, I realize that it was a good thing I never fell on my head - that thing was old and flimsy! When I started back riding as an adult (with a proper helmet :)), I dug it out and asked my husband, "well, what should I do with this?" and he said "how about a museum!"
I was 12. It was a week-long day camp at a QH farm that culminated in a "show."
I got up at 5 AM to walk to my cousin's so she could french braid my hair. I then appropriated my brother's white button-down. And my sister's sweater vest. To wear with my nice "dress up" khakis. And my sneakers.
I thought I looked like I belonged in the ribbons. I wish we had photos.
That is a sweet memory to have :) did one of those elusive ribbons come winging it's way to you or did your dress khakis not cut it in the showing world??!!
I remember my first helmet. We went to a tack store that no longer exists and I bought a purple International. I lost it within a few months; it got mixed up with the other lesson helmets. The next one was my silver International (yes the one in my icon) that I rode in for 10+ years and many falls. Oops.
One of my most embarassing...when I first started showing I wore white polos or blouses that my mom shrunk in the wash and an old suit jacket of hers. Looking back, I really appreciate it but at that age and showing with a lot of rich kids, I was completely embarassed. I remember getting my first show shirt and jacket - I was so happy to look like a professional. ;)
I started late but I remember getting my first pair of proper jodphurs and boots at 14 and showing up to my next lesson strutting around thinking I looked awesome. I didn't get a proper helmet until last year when I started looking for a horse to buy. I think there was still a bit pf strutting because that helmet was the first thing I bought for myself and my OWN horse :P
