I'm keeping my horse (Jake) and my loan horse (Rocket) a small 7 acre barn (6 stalls) that is owned by my friends parents. Today the owner Cindy texted me and said there was an extra horse in Field 3, where my two are turned out. I would contact local rescue organizations (here's a list by state from my site: http://www.equinerescueleague.org/rescuesip.htm). Rescues often have information on local missing horses and/or can help you try to find them.

I've run into several cases that could explain something like this - just a couple of months ago, a driver noticed a horse grazing on the wrong side of the fence from his buddies, and pulled over and helpfully stuck him "back" in "his" field. He didn't belong there, he'd accidently gotten out of his own paddock and traveled almost a mile from home until he ran into some other horses. He then just hung out with his new friends until the driver found him and stuck him in the field. The property owners returned from an evening out and found that they had an extra horse...

You might want to check with animal control to find out the process of adopting the found horse out, just in case. The rightful owner could show up and have legal rights to the horse in the future if you don't follow laws/proceedures and that would be sad for the new owners!

none of those are at all close to me unfortunately, but I'll still call them to see what they say. We've called the police, so if it turns out no one shows up for the horse we'll just see where we can go from there.
Thanks!
