The elves of the Greenwood could have been a little more accommodating. And while Bilbo understood Thranduil’s desperation to keep all things under his watch safe, what harm would it have caused him to simply feed them and let them on their way?

And there was something wrong with his ring. He could hear it whispering.

Where was Gandalf when you needed him!

The Keeper of the Keys was an easy drunk - that, or the wine was spectacular. The ride down the river was…less so. So focused was he on staying afloat (for water and fire do not mix well) that Bilbo missed the moment Kili was shot. Had he seen, then undoubtedly he could have helped sooner and the poor young dwarrow might not have been left behind in Laketown.

Laketown! Never had Bilbo seen more of a fire hazard before. And he could smell wrongness here too. The ‘Master’ seemed to have bathed in it. Bard though, Bard was a good, honourable man. Much like Thranduil, desperate to protect what he loved, but less weary at heart. Younger; still with hope.

Hope they most sorely needed. Kili poisoned, the company three short, and today…today was already Durin’s Day.
