HP fannishness, plus a little PotC and DW

To the HP fans on my flist: while I am not averse to reading DH spoilers, I will be extremely careful to keep any information (or even general reactions) under labeled LJ cuts. This applies before and after the release of the book; I'm aware that for one reason or another, many fans may not get a chance to read the book for days or even weeks after it's released.

(Random side note: yesterday's episode was seriously the best episode of Doctor Who ever. Every aspect of it was just perfect and brilliant and wonderful. Yes.)

Assorted recs:

Bent Rule, adult. Well-written post-At World's End Norrington/Will/Elizabeth. Poignant and sexy, an utterly brilliant way to move on from the movie's ending.

The Blue Door (link is to part 5/5, but has links to the first four parts), adult. This is Snape/Lupin fic that I think even non-SS/RL fans would enjoy, because it's about as far from a shippy story as you can get; indeed, by the end of the story, I found myself disliking if not hating both characters. It's an exploration of the subject of adultery/infidelity, and it's so incredibly well done. I can't recall the last time I've seen a story that was so ruthless in portraying a relationship falling apart. Really worth reading, but not a happy story.

And finally, but most fantastically, rhoddlet wrote HP fanfic for me! I've known rhoddlet for . . . wow, almost ten years . . . and she's always been one of the most talented authors I've known, even though she hasn't been doing much in fandom of late. The Alteration of Ghosts is gen with a little James/Lily, but it's one of the most lovely, evocative studies of Lily and the Hogwarts ghosts that I've seen. rhoddlet has a gift for such gorgeous turns of phrase and bits of insight; this is how the story starts:

Seventh year was not the end of Hogwarts for Lily: two years after leaving, she came back. Binns had lost a great-great-grandchild -- odd to think of a ghost as having family, but he married as a young man, and he had been very close with this particular descendant. Death Eaters killed him, though, and Binns was inconsolable. It was also occasionally difficult to be married to James, so when Dumbledore suggested it, Lily came back to Hogwarts. There were, in fact, times when Binns would not put the effort into staying visible. After classes finished for the day and the door was shut, Binns got very transparent. Bit by bit, he would fade, first to pale gray, then to white, then to nothing but dust.

Edit: I almost forgot! One of my stories was nominated in the Perfect Paire Awards. I will ignore the irony of my first award nomination in ages being for het, and instead say: thank you so much, whoever nominated me!
