West Virgina

I can't believe I voluntarily chose to move to West Virginia. Most days, I can't believe I live in this state. I definitely wish that someone had informed me how things work in Morgantown BEFORE I opted to uproot myself from everything and everyone I know and love.

For example:

1. EVERYTHING in this state is blue and gold. People modify the paint jobs on their cars to be blue and gold, the bags at most stores are blue and gold, license plates are blue and gold....EVERYTHING. You name it. I like both blue and gold as much as the next person, but really a little diversity in the color palette is really a good thing.

2. On game days, the town shuts down. They close roads. They cancel classes....at the University and at local high schools!! Restaurants close early, people duck out of work early....the priorities here astound me.

3. Their is a WVU Mountaineers theme song....a rap song about supporting the football team. This is beyond my comprehension.

4. You can buy beer in the grocery store. This is, perhaps, one of very few positives.

5. On game days, if you are not wearing the state colors...err, blue and gold, you are looked at likea traitor.

6. Do NOT diss coal. The words "alternative energy sources" are considered to be dirty. These people love their coal (as a means of supporting the local economy, just as the football games do, I'm sure) and you are not in the in if you don't agree.

7. There is sales tax on food. This stinks.

8. Yes, it's true. People burn couches in the streets. I prefer to sit and relax on mine.

9. There are no Tim Horton's or Dunkin Donuts within a reasonable driving distance of my house. This has led to a serious lack of good, cheap coffee which has induced a rather unpleasant caffiene shortage into my life.

10. There is a SERIOUS lack of parking. It's unlike anything I've ever seen.

These facts, added to the fact that I'm probably going to have to replace the brakes on my car like every 3 months from all the hills have led me to seriously question whether or not this move was a good idea. To think , I could be Arizona, working for the Jesuits, bilingually teaching my little 4th graders. Instead, I came to WVU where I will sit at my desk all day long today to grade nearly 1,450 math problems.

Life must get better than this.
