Those Who Favor Fire

He has always burned.
His life is powered by combustion, by the heat of his anger and the flare of desire. The sun scorches his skin, seers him brown with a hint of red beneath. Hot words, hot head, hot blooded.
Kissing her is like drinking ice water. She soothes him but can never extinguish the flame. She is so calm, words precise, hair and skin like the barest hint of sunrise in the winter.
"What happened there?" he asks, and "They branded me," is her reply. It healed with aloe and water and the island, but the fact remains.
She has been burned before.
The fire lives in her somewhere, wick below a damper, smoldering in secret places, consuming all the oxygen. He could set her alight, just as she can freeze him with a look, a touch, a word. They crave the things they aren't, and the intersection where they come together.
It will not always be this way, but for now, this is their only method of survival.
