(no subject)

I haven't been around much. I don't know when that will change. But, I am lurking and reading my flist, even if I'm not posting or commenting. I don't have much else to say but for some reason I felt the need to put that out there.

There's a poetry meme going around and I don't know what the exact rules are. Oh, wait, there it is. Simple. When you see this, post your favorite poem.

My favorite poem has been Edna St. Vincent Millay's "First Fig" since I was in third grade. I memorized it as soon as I encountered it and I still adore it, though I have no idea what appeal it had to someone who was in third grade.

My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night
But o my friends and o my foes
It gives a lovely light

The other poem I think of when the subject of favorite poems comes up is "Teaching the Ape to Write Poems." You know those campaigns for poetry in public places? I encountered this poem on public transit in Portland. So for at least one person, those campaigns do work!

They didn't have much trouble
teaching the ape to write poems:
first they strapped him into the chair,
then tied the pencil around his hand
(the paper had already been nailed down).
Then Dr. Bluespire leaned over his shoulder
and whispered into his ear:
"You look like a god sitting there.
Why don't you try writing something?"
