How I Became Pro-Choice

I'm not really a "blogger" but I felt compelled to be a part of this. So here is the story of my Reproductive Rights journey.

In high school, I identified more with the pro-life side mainly because I bought into the Catholic propaganda that abortion is a sin. I didn't really think about it that much because it just seemed so far removed from my life. The only instance I remember of hearing about someone having an abortion was this sophomore that I couldn't stand. Hating her made it easy to condemn her choices.

By the time I was in college, I developed a more nuanced view. I felt that I would never have an abortion, but that I shouldn't make that decision for others. I realized that just because I didn't agree with something did not give me the right to deny others the ability to make their own judgements. I held on to this position for a while, advocating for choice but still retaining a bit of this personal moral superiority.

Sometime within my college experience, I dropped the whole "abortion is bad" part of my stance. The reason for this change is simply that I grew up. The whole issue didn't seem so distantly hyopthetical anymore. I met more people and faced more situations and realized that the world is much more complex.

Being Pro-Choice is about more than the right to have an abortion. It's about having access to health care and information. It's about being able to approach your own sexuality on your terms. It's the idea that being female is more than being a walking uterus. It's about acknowleding that the world is not just black and white. It's about social justice and economic empowerment. It's about not having a patriarchal and judgmental system decide what is best for everyone. Overall, it's about liberty.
