I think taking the legal history seminar was a good thing. The best part is that it is not a normal law school class. Yesterday we went on a "field trip" to the City Archives, which is in this non-descript warehouse by Druid Hill Park. This class has 5 students and 3 professors. Pretty good ratio there isn't it? It gets even better when one professor had two assistants come along.
We went through the City Solicitors Records to look for the case files on the cases we had picked out. The records are way back in the warehouse in boxes that are on shelves and stacked two deep. It's also really dusty and dirty back there, but I wore work clothes just for that purpose. The files are basically in chronological order but none of the boxes are marked with dates. So we were told sort of where to start but it was basically going through and looking for large folders and seeing if they were your case.
It took me a while to find one of my cases, though I did happen to come across a case that referenced my case. Of course the case that followed my case was in a box that came before the box my case was in, which complicated my search. But I wasn't able to find my other case (which I thought was more interesting) before they told us to finish up. I was disappointed because I think that if I had searched longer I would have found a large file.
It was so much fun to leave the law school setting and go out and "get dirty" as it were. It was also quite a workout dragging these heavy boxes on and off the shelves in the dirty heat. It made me feel like I was doing habitat again. It is so nice going and "doing" something instead of sitting in class all the time. The only problem is I woke up this morning and my back is pretty sore. Need to remember to lift with the legs!
