set the tone

who would've thought that, three years after gleefully freaking out over them on the sing-off, i'd get to see pentatonix perform in the flesh, in singapore, and have it be one of the wildest concerts i've ever been to?

it's a transformative experience. i can't think of any other way to describe it. listening to them sing is like finding a secret door to another world where the only things that exist are high-octane harmonies and beautiful people and nothing ever hurts ever. sure, their choreography wasn't as clean or tight as it was on the sing-off (though that might be down to the fact that those were only ever minute-long performances, and this is an entire concert), and mitch might be the most flamboyant, adorable little gay dancing monkey you ever did see (and boy did they dial that down on the show), but their sound is richer and fuller and better than it's ever been

i mean, the concert wasn't life changing, but it was an eye-opener. they're so young, and out there, and different, and they push the boundaries of acapella music like nothing i've ever seen or heard before. it's such a fun ride, and they are all so ridiculously talented you can't help being swept up in the journey. honestly, who wouldn't want to be?

the arrangements were all AMAZING, and every single one of them sounded SO GOOD. there is so much talent in that group it simultaneously blows and boggles my mind. there wasn't one sour note the entire night, even from kirstie, who seems to be getting knocked around by jetlag a little bit. i will straight up admit to not being a huge fan of mitch's voice irl, but damn, does that boy have a range on him or what. and scott! i never really got the scott thing before this, but oh my gosh, i did tonight. he is SO ADORABLE. and those runs are out of this world! ALSO OUT OF THIS WORLD: AVI'S ~MOVES~ how did i not know that he could give channing tatum a run for his money in the lapdance department? and that voice. THAT VOICE. that voice could move mountains. fell beasts. PART THE HEAVENS. he got all of the talky bits and that was genuinely the BEST THING. AND WHEN SCOTT BROUGHT HIM OUT TO DO HIS OVERTONE SINGING LIKE WHAT. THE FUCK. WAS THAT. I WAS GENUINELY FLOORED. HAND-OVER-MOUTH MAKING SEAL NOISES FLOORED. that was incredible. one of the highlights of my night, for sure.

but i already loved avi before this, so that wasn't a surprise. i've always been a sucker for a pretty voice. BUT THEN KEVIN. KEVINNNNNNNN. oh my gosh, THOSE HANDS. THOSE FINGERS. WHAT ON EARTH. when he came out to play renegade? that was my favourite moment of the night. second favourite performance of the night, even. (the first being say something because oh my god, BEST COVER OF THAT SONG EVER EVER EVER, and the third being scott and avi's faces as they went down on serenaded that chick on let's get it on.) also kevin spoke in chinese (of course, couldn't leave without pulling that hat trick out a couple of times), which would have annoyed me because of how gimmicky it was, and how generally disrespectful i find that to be (i mean yes, fine, we're a chinese majority, but that's not even our national language, so how about NOT DOING SOMETHING SO CULTURALLY IGNORANT AND THEN PATTING YOURSELVES ON THE BACK FOR IT, CELEBRITIES. speak fucking english, or go pick up some malay, THEN we'll talk.) but as i developed an instantaneous talent crush on him on the heels of his renegade performance, i let it go. PLUS HE TALKED ABOUT CHICKEN RICE. AND WANTING TO TRY BOON TONG KEE. LIKE, SOMEBODY PUNCH ME IN THE FACE PLEASE HOW IS HE SO FREAKING ADORABLE I CANNOT

...this was supposed to be a coherent recap of my night, but i am legitimately bursting with feelings and i can't hold them in. all in all, the talent was astounding, the music was great (even though it turned out i didn't actually know that many songs they were covering, and that i don't particularly enjoy their originals) and if you haven't heard them do say something yet, YOU SHOULD. the live version genuinely gave me chills, it was so haunting and perfect and lovely. and when they did evolution of music, i just about passed out, i was so happy. i've watched that video so many times i was mouthing along to the whole thing, and i got extra beamy at the bit where the colour kicks in. the lighting was EXCELLENT, too, aside from the moments where they decided it would be a good idea to shine the light directly into the audience's eyes, what the fuck, who started that trend and can we kill him?

kudos to the audience, too, for making that so high energy and such a great experience. everyone was so obviously into it, and so stoked to be there, and it was just the most awesome feeling. who knew singaporean audiences could be like that? add to that the fact that i was in an awesome, adorable new outfit, and that i had great company in the form of tynislove and that we had a fabulous (albeit crazy pricey) dinner at osteria mozza, and it's safe to say that tonight was definitely one of the best concert-going experiences of my life.

om nom nom, my capslock key is brokeded, i like the sound of my own voice, can we get a w00t w00t, chronicles of an ordinary life, superstah: pentatonix, i done did it: concert attendance, surround sound
