OMG...Torchwood fics
Since Jane has set the precedence for ranting about an entire fandom, I'm going to give Torchwood a try.
Please note that this isn't a criticism on the show because (1) that is not the focus of this comm and (2) for a Sci Fi show, Torchwood isn't too bad, I watch it too.
Now some ground rules. I don't like Jack Harkness (for some of the same reasons why I don't like Captain Kirk); I don't like his attitude, I don't agree with some of his code of ethics, and frankly, sleeping with your own secretary (oh wait, we're supposed to call them office admins now) during office hours is simply unprofessional. This is a personal preference and I have no trouble enjoying the show or fanfiction with a canon Jack.
What I have a problem with is the portrayal of Ianto. While the Torchwood fandom is quite sizable and prolific, there seems to be only one Ianto: the Ianto who is in a casual relationship (co-workers with benefits?) with Jack but wants more because, oh, Jack is his One True Love, but is willing to settle for what Jack wants, which is just sex and no promises of marriage/forever/babies. Sure, no problem, that fits with canon pretty well. However, after reading the 10th or 20th story with the exact same Ianto, I feel like screaming: Give me a different Ianto!
Sure, Jack may just be the way he is (i.e. incapable of a long-term commitment), I really can't see Ianto (in all of the various fanfiction incarnations) being happy with this sort of relationship in the long run. Again, I don't mind seeing this Ianto in one or two fics, but why must everyone portray him such?
Dear fellow fanfiction readers and Torchwood lovers, in lieu of flames (yes, I know I'm abandoning tradtition), recommendations of Torchwood fics with a different kind of Ianto will be appreciated. ::and please put down the pitchforks; yes, I know you're hiding them::
