I barely have any metal working things, beyond an underpowered dremel and some hand tools. I need to steal shop space from Paula's dad or some of my blacksmith friends. At least http://www.framingconnectors.com/product/278 makes a coat of plates much easier, and probably lamellar (with some modification, though I'm not convinced I'd not be better served buying proper lamalle). At least 20 ga galvanized is equivalent to 18 ga standard so they're legal armor in every system I play.
That'd be for lamellar, and I can pick those up at Home Depot for $0.55 a pop. I figure I'll need 52 for an armored surcoat, no overlap, plus ~15-20 of the next size up for chest and back. I'm only going armpit to waist, so that's ~12", and at my largest point I've got a 48" circumference (oof, time to lay off the donuts...). Throw in a little ease to account for the gambeson and maile, and I figure 26 plates will encircle me.

That's pretty much the next armor I want to make, after the gambeson. It looks pretty darned spiffy I think. Though mine will be blue with white trim.

That would be pretty darned spiffy.

Let's see...assume a cylindrical Flip, area to be covered 36" high and, oh, 18" in diameter (so a right regular cylinder), 2*pi*r*h=4000+ inches.
Assume overlap means that smallest size effectively becomes 1" by 5"...yep, that's some leftover, although not a frightening amount.
But I may be off on the overlap, and/or area estimate.

I hope that was helpful, at any rate.
