When I posted last week, it looked like I'd lost a few more pounds, for a total weight loss this year of 12.4 pounds. Those last two weigh-ins were done standing on one foot, with a splint resting on the scale and me making my best effort to not lean any of my weight on the crutches that were helping me stay upright.
My weigh-in today was the same position with a cast instead of a splint. Today's weight says my total loss for this year is 2.6 pounds. I can't try on a pair of pants to see how I'm doing because pants won't go over the cast, and I don't own any non-elastic pants that fit snugly enough to tell a difference based on 10 pounds either way anyhow. Online estimates of the weight of a fiberglass cast range from 1.5 to 4 pounds, in no case anywhere near enough to account for a nearly 10 pound weight increase in 6 days.
I WILL NOT cry over a scale. I can assume that the two weigh-ins previous to this week were light because I was leaning on the crutches more than I realized and that the cast weighs about 3 pounds which means I'm right where I started. How's that for a juicy, dripping rationalization? I also did eat chips and salsa which means water retention. Maybe I'll try weighing again tomorrow morning before I eat anything.... I'm willfully not documenting today's weight until I get more evidence.
I saw the surgeon yesterday for the first post-op followup. His staff unwrapped the ace bandages around the splint, tossed the splint, removed the staples and very gently set up for a cast. Supposedly the incision looks good, although I thought it looked like someone made a four inch vertical slice over my ankle bone and stapled it shut. It was interesting that there's a guy whose full time job is putting casts on people. He does 90% of the work, handling the injured limb very gently. The doc pops in for 3 minutes to "mold" the cast as the inner layer is hardening. "Mold" is a polite way of saying "bend this broken joint into the correct position for healing, using my years of experience, and not being particularly gentle."
Ed and I suspect there's a significant Republican contingent in the office. First, the TV in the waiting room has been set to FOX News both times we've been there. Also, the surgeon mentioned he hunts just before surgery. It was an interesting exercise for me to watch half an hour of FOX News, especially on Super Tuesday.
I started the post feeling whiny and miserable, but feel better just for getting it out of my system. Really, if I don't GAIN any weight during a 2 or 3 month recovery that's a big achievement. Need to stay positive.
