for better or worse, I have held onto to a number of things from my childhood, but it was the (fear of) loss of some of that earlier this week that was really getting me down. the imagination, the creativity, the belief in the "impossible"... if I'd let myself let go of those things, I'd have set myself out on a path to a life that I, being who I am, and not who I would have become by losing such things, would not think worth living.

sorry, I don't think that wound up having much to do with your post at all. just got me thinking, I guess.

I counter:

We can change, but it's just that it's very hard. Most people reach a certain point, often early on, where they think the can handle the world, so they stop changing. Thus, whatever patterns they have by then laid down get reinforced. (This is, incidentally, my current understanding of karma.) However, with effort, one can confront the patterns one already has and, slowly, change them. A big part of that is finding the child who didn't have those patterns, the one who saw the world fresh before laying them down. So, props to you.
