Probably :-s
I know how many of my friends and aquaintences will be clutching their pearls and taking a sharp intake of breath at that heading - I would normally be one of them! However, even without being able to get to any car boot sales in far too long I have gathered a small number of books I can bear to do this to.
You see, I have been watching/reading about découpage, collage and various types of journal-making that have had me wincing over some of the books the creators have been tearing up, but left me wanting to do something similar, if you see what I mean. Not to books that are simply old and/or a bit niche interest, but there are some aged books that are missing pages and beyond saving, outdated books that were mass produced, Readers Digest Abridged volumes... you know the sort of thing. The type of books that sit around on an older relative's shelf, unopened for years, and don't often turn up in Charity or junk shops because they know they just can't sell them for a price that is worthy of the shelf space they take up.
These kind of books were usually available in plenty at car boot sales, but as these are no longer accessible to me, my options are limited . However, over the recent months I have collected together several nicely illustrated if basic encyclopedias, a book of music, a French/English dictionary, a couple of AA tourist volumes and some kind of old history in Polish (falling apart). Most of them were in a charity shop's dump bin at only 5p each to clear and not fill their rubbish bin. Of course, a couple of the books I acquired, like what I thought was a cheap kiddies Gulliver's Travels and is actually a nice facsimile, have ended up on the shelves instead c'est la vie
It is a shame about the sales, as the Readers Digests are apparently very good to use as a starting base for your own journal. One thing I am hoping not to do is create an overstuffed brick of a book, full of about every embellishment and tecnique going, all lace and suchlike festooning the edges, all just about held together by some strands of jute string or torn fabric! Seriously, I keep wanting to comment on videos of people proudly showing off such OTT monstrocities that 'LESS IS MORE!!'. Why create several, well thought out books, when you can shove all of it in one? There is no room to journal or add your own touches, yet these things are being offered up on Etsy after the reveal!
There are some very nice exceptions, creators that offer/show books with a cohesive theme and a bit of restraint, and it is those that gel better with my own desires to create one. However, first I need to overcome my inner bibliophile and dismantle at least one of theses books, wholly or in part. I have a fair amount of scenic, bird and vintage looking pages to add interest to the various papers I have. All I need is to make a start... **wibbles**
