Summary: A trip on Mt. Everest goes terribly wrong.
His fingers were frozen. He was certain of it. The snow had chilled him beyond his bones. He shivered uncontrollably. He couldn't speak without a stutter. He could barely swallow. He still couldn't believe he had been so careless.
David knelt in front of him, looking up at him with worry in his eyes.
It was David who rescued him from the avalanche. It was David who dug him out of the snow. It was David who jumped him back to the Lair.
He sat on his couch with a blanket spread across his shoulders, a cup of tea in his hands. The tea seemed burning hot to his numb fingers. Pins and needles shot through the digits as he held the cup. David was in the process of placing Griffin's feet in a small tub of hot water and rubbing them gently, bending and unbending them.
It was so silly. He wanted David to get used to the cold, so he took him up Mt. Everest. They had winter clothes on, because he planned for them to stay there a while and he didn't fancy being frozen stiff. It actually began as a fun expedition. Griffin even laughed when David slipped and fell on his ass.
The avalanche hit him so suddenly that his first reaction to jump away failed him. He was swept away in a flurry of snow, with David's voice shouting for him. By some small miracle Griffin managed to stay near the surface of the snow which made it that much easier for David to come to his aid. It still took some time for Griffin to be freed from his icy prison. David held him tight and jumped them both away.
Once back in the Lair David stripped him out of his wet clothes and threw a blanket over him. After that he set out to warm Griffin up gradually, starting by cupping Griffin's hands and blowing warm air on them. Once they were warm enough that he could bend them with relative ease David pushed a cup of tea in his hands and moved on to his feet.
Griffin only managed to stare while David worked. More than once he tried to speak but he couldn't force his throat to make a sound.
David glanced up at him. He pushed Griffin's hands up to his face. "Try and drink some."
Griffin put the cup to his lips and let a small sip of tea pass them. He immediately pulled it away.
"...hot..." he whispered.
"I know, Griffin, I know, but you have to." David's eyes pleaded with him.
Griffin shook his head pathetically.
David whined and took the cup from his hands and scurried away. Griffin heard him do something but couldn't tell what it was. Within almost no time at all David returned to him and once again pressed the cup in his hands.
"Here, try it now. I cooled it a little with some water."
Griffin sipped again and this time found the temperature manageable. He took another sip to David's great relief. His hands rested on Griffin's legs. Griffin could feel the tea work its way through his system and slowly but surely warm him up from the inside.
David began pulling his sweater over his head, his winter jacket long since discarded. His pants followed, and some cursing as the boots caught in them. Finally he was stripped down to his underwear. He moved beside Griffin on the couch and pulled Griffin against his frame, wrapping the blanket around them both.
The warmth that enveloped Griffin was enough to make him sigh. He didn't feel like he was going to die anytime soon, though he still felt slightly cold, he no longer felt numb.
"You'll be alright, Griffin," David whispered into his hair. "You'll be alright, you hear me?"
David had told him that several times over the span of the evening, but this time Griffin actually believed the words. He was going to be okay. He had David to make sure of that.
