Hey y'all, yes I am a southerner it seems.
5 foods, or I have decided- 5 meals. Most epic most memory induced foods.
1) Picnic in Verona: Italy trip Grade 12, Kelz and Mich and me. They kept touting McDonald's as "Scottish" food and I was having none of it. McDix in Italy is a revelation, romaine lettuce local meats, and beer, but Really. I know I said more than once "I did not come all this way for McDix or crap-tastic pizza, I came to eat good food" We went to a local deli/grocery store, which you should always do in a foreign land, and bought bread, meat and cheese, chocolate some juice and then we went to a market for some fruit . It was fabulous. We ate in the park and had a wonderful time, and really got to enjoy the scenery. Kelz speaks functional Italian so it worked out great.
2) German grocer disaster: similar story, but on a Contiki tour in third year university. Neither Myth nor I speak German, and most locals in Disdain do not speak English. We didn't understand the total price when the cashier told us and we didn't know how to ask for a bag. We bought cheese and bread, being weirdly momentary vegetarians, chocolate, some sort of beverage, olive and I am sure of a German dessert. The weird thing is the grocer in Italy looked almost nothing like groceries here, but in the 3 years that had elapsed, lots had changed and we could have been in grocery in a mall in Calgary for all the different it looked from North American shopping centres in 2008. We ate it partially by the fountain near the bus and then on the bus even though we weren't to eat dairy on the bus.
3) 7 course meal in London in 1998: My dad had been living in France for about 8 months and my mom and me for 4 and a bit, and we were almost home free, but they had decided to plan a stop over in London for 3 days between France and Canada... bad plan. We just wanted to go home. The tension, the resentment, and the tiredness all sent us spiralling into disfunction and mean-ness. This may sound horrible and it was, but most of 1998 is awesome in retrospective. School in France was awful, and well this is just the case of three people spending way too much time together. We were walking on the high street in London, or well one of them, and they have these con-men... aka concierges that are meant to draw you in from the main road into these establishments, and my om wanted this chinese restaurant. France has almost no fast food, and I mean the stuff for take out, chinese, indian or pizza, and maybe Paris does. But Chateau-Renault, small town outside Tours, 4 hours North of Paris, does not. It was a Chinese restaurant with extravagant courses- duck, noodles, pork. chicken, eggs, dessert, rice, sauces and sauces, too much food, more than you could shake a stick at, and we ate it all. It was fine. It was sort of right before you are too hungry and anything anyone thinks or says it wrong because you are starving... This happens to me a lot, and being eleven escorted back and forth from France to England, chinese food is something of a marvel. We are and we smiled and damn it, if we weren't getting on that plane back to Ottawa and Back to civilization.
4) 21st Birthday party- or 22- you be the judge: my friends, well close ones, know of this meal they used to have on campus at York University, when I went there in 1st year, that was crazy and delicious. Fries with sour cream and then shredded cheese on top. And after coming home demoralized about the fairness of the world, and really... REALLY? ok. I decided added mac and cheese to the layering would be just heart inducingly delicious. So the layering goes French Fries, mac'n'cheese, sour cream and then shredded cheese. Awesome. I made it for about 20 or so people, with K's help I am sure, we did a lot fo Kareokee, drank too much, and had a gay old time. It was amazing, and I to top it all off, I know I made veggie ground round fajitas the next day for everyone too. Good times.
5)PEI 2005: A long road trip with C/L, Myth and K, and Babe and I after Myth and I, and K, too graduated from High School. We set off on a long road trip travelling to Montague PEI, where I am now, after a wedding and a bebe, :D
We set off for the other side of the Island, travelling with rumbling tummies and a van not fit for anything we finally made it to the 100 foot salad bar. "Are you kidding?" NO, and well, it was the gimmick that got you into a wharf restaurant in PEI. L had given up seafood and so, 5 happy people had a lobster and he had sole or some equally tasteless white fish while the 5 of us, C might have had shrimps or crab or something, and I know Babe and Me, Myth and K had lobbies, and dun dun dun 100 foot salad bar, all side dishes, mashed potatoes, rice, noodles, pasta salad, and all dessert included therein. It was great, even have photos on Facebook. Fabulous trip. soon after I went to York and it all unravelled until it didn't.
These are 5 meals that stood the course of history for me. If another strikes your fancy please let me know.
Enjoy!
Arc.
We are leaving for New Hampshire tomorrow. Thank G-d. I want to go home, and well, Ash is missing his Daddy. We are hopefully making it back for Wednesday. I'll see I suppose. Did not much today... watched Let's make a deal, price is right and read for K. Armstrong. trying to finish "No humans involved" It is great.
We went outside for a bit but the hurricane (Maria) is trying to make outside unpleasant. Feeling for Myth and K in Newfoundland. Hope you don't get slammed. Missing them a lot, but I know they'll be in Ottawa beginning of October. This trip was good for carving up time before they are home. I hope that we will still have a nice relationship when I see them more than I guess not seeing them.
I think it was rambly. Sorry. I am not editing. I am on a no Editing Phase.
Writing help really appreciated.
