Who: Sirius Black cockofthewok and Lily Evans gifted_witch Where Lily's room When: September 22, Afternoon Rating: PG, maybe PG-13 Summary: Sirius has dinner with Lily and they chill like villains. the Story: ( Sorry James, I'm stealing your woman )
At least it wasn't 666. That would be Snape's numbers, but Sirius didn't say this. This Lily still liked Snape and didn't know what he was capable of. How much of an ass he was. She didn't know that he hadn't done a thing to help them since he'd arrived, how he was only acting as he was in order to win Lily. How he was hiding his true nature. That was the part that was making Sirius sick right now. That Snape was doing his best to play Lily like a well tuned violin. One didn't treat a girl like that. James had taught him that. James and Terra.
Upon walking around the room he noticed the alterations. It looked very much like Lily, fresh and clean, similar to the flower. He couldn't help but smile. "I like what you've done with the place." At the invitation to sit he sat on the bed with her, offering the basket for her to inspect. She'd be rather pleased with the content. The sandwiches were those that she'd mentioned before that she enjoyed. The contents were more of a small muggle picnic then anything wizarding. After all, she'd expressed a few times how she'd missed simple things while she was here. He thought it might be a bit more comforting having muggle things.
Lily looked so young really. He remembered those times, that year with a certain distant fondness. Things had been less complicated, less dangerous. Still, he and the others had been real jerks back then. Not that they'd changed much in regards to how they treated Snape, but the bastard deserved it - even more after reading the book and how he treated Harry. The previous Snape had gained a sort of reprieve however. He was working toward finding a way out, working toward being a better person. This Snape was the opposite. He wasn't working toward anything but a forced shower.
At the use of his last name the older boy mentally cringed. It had been a bit under a year since she'd done that, just as it'd been a bit under a year since he's called her Evans. "Sirius if you don't mind, and I thought as much. Things can be a bit overwhelming when you first arrive. We'll help with that. The events too. They can be rather like a kick to the brain." Not that they didn't know that Lily wasn't a strong witch, they just knew that the events could be worse then anything here.
"Sirius then," She nodded, the name still not quite at home on her tongue. But apparently they had gotten to that point, the older version of herself and him.but as long as we're correcting names I would ask you to call me Lily only if you stop calling Sev, Snivilus." Feeling she'd done her duty as a friend she turned attention back to the food, Lily found herself utterly delighted with the basket and the sparkle of her eyes said so.
"This is just like what mum used to make! She and dad would take Petunia and I to the park, there were these trees along one side that looked like an endless forest. I used to pretend it was some place magical." She had the look of fond memory, top teeth set gently against her lower lip as she looked past the wall, seeing something from the past. A dawdling moment spent in memory before she shook it off, slight blush rising to her cheeks.
"Before I knew what real magic was I mean. I'm sure it's nothing to how you grew up, but it was fun." She smiled a bit and handed him a sandwich, folding her legs to look at him quite seriously a moment. "You and I, when I was here before I mean, we were....friends?"
He said nothing to the Snivilous comment. Really, he only called the boy names when he deserved it anymore ... which was often. As she spoke of the past he couldn't help but smile. She was so innocent. Nothing like him who was dirtied by pureblood lies and hatred. Idly he wondered what it would be like to be like that. To be that innocent.
"No," he admitted about his own childhood. "But it reminds me a bit of Mr. and Mrs. Potter. They're ancient, but they're amazing. When things got bad James and them would always be there for me." At her question a pained expression passed over his eyes, but it was gone quickly, as if it had never been there before.
This wasn't the same Lily. It wasn't right to show her if he was hurting. "Tick as thieves." He let out a dry laugh. "If you can believe that." There was a long pause as he chose his words carefully. "I know you're not the same Lily I knew for the past two years, not even the same one I knew four years ago, but we're going to get you out of here. We'll get everyone back home where they belong." And they'd change that future where Harry is forced to live alone.
She caught it, they might not be close but Lily was an excellent study of people. It was one of the reasons she was so popular, she always knew the right things to say and do. Well around most people she did, around Potter specifically she tended to be tongue tied and lean toward short curt quips.
Apparently they had been close, so close that as things were now he grieved that loss. Yet another indication that she and Black ...Sirius, she reminded herself, had grown close enough to cause this reaction. She spent a moment to look at him critically. Alright, he was attractive.
Attractive? Lilly he was bloody gorgeous. He was also well off, a more than decent wizard, and as he'd shown recently he could be exceedingly kind. He knew her well enough to know that this little meal would be something that would make her feel a bit more at him. Hadn't he embraced her when she'd first arrived? She needed to face it. She had been involved with Sirius Black, no wonder he and Sev didn't exactly get along.
"Well, it's true I am not the Lily that you knew, strictly speaking. But I am still Lily, and I can't believe that me at any age is so terribly different. Mum used to tell me I was unfailingly consistent."
Oh no, they didn't get along for a completely different reason. Because Severus was everything Sirius saw that was wrong with the world.
At her comment on herself he couldn't help but offer a wry smile. "Constant is one way of putting it." Infallible, often correct, and a bloody pain in the ass sometimes was another way of putting it. Still, Sirius liked her that way. He could see why James had fallen so hard for her. She was a very dynamic young woman.
Lily nibbled along the edge of the sandwhich, and sipped a bit at her juice. Watching him, listening to his tone with what little hid did speak. Black was not the same idle prat she'd known, he had grown andshe had to admit this was a more pleasent version of him than she had expected to ever meet, and it made her smile.
"I am sure you have had many terms for me, Bl..Sirius." She caught herself, corrected it with a sheepish shrug. She was trying at least.
He tried very hard to ignore the slip up. She was trying, and that was more then he could have hoped for. "James was the one making up the terms. Goddess was his favorite." He scratched the back of his head. "We're only mean to the deserving." Another wry smirk. Really, they were. It was true that they had house rivalries, but they were only terribly cruel to those that took Voldamort's doctrine to heart. Those that had proven unworthy by calling muggle-borns mudbloods, or something else unacceptable.
"Yes, I am sure Potter was the one behind it all. He is a natural born leader, if only he'd apply himself to something." He had such potential, well both of them did. But Potter was obviously so intelligent, even when he spent his time joking and pranking he still managed top marks in his classes. He never outdid Lily, few ever did, but he was still exceptional.
"Well, I trust no one here is deserving." She finished her sandwich and tipped back the drink once more. All in all this was possibly the most pleasent time she'd ever spent with Sirius.
He made a point not to mention that Snape was indeed worthy of being whipped and flogged and mocked to death. "He does actually." He needed to defend his best friend to the one day mother of his godson. "If something needs to be done he's always right there doing it. Crossed over to the other side more times then I can count just to help someone."
"You admire him, don't you?" A curious head tilt as she pondered this. It took quite a lot to impress Sirius about anything except himself. Even if it was his best friend, that note of defense of him made her pause. Every moment seeming to illuminate more about Sirius that she never would have expected.
Sirius nodded. "He's one of the reasons I didn't end up a drone like every other pureblood out there. A true Gryffindor if ever I met one." He was smiling brightly as he talked about his best friend. Like a small boy with a bit of idol warship. He really couldn't help it. He knew James had his faults, and they made things more fun, but the boy was truly a good person. Not like most purebloods he'd known. "Not saying he's not a complete prat. We all are, but if things need to be serious he's one of the first to do anything to help."
Lily laughed hard, having to cover her mouth to avoid potentially spewing some of her last mouthful of drink. So he admitted, with glee no less, that they were prats. She managed to swallow and continued to laugh, finding herself warming to Sirius despite her previous cold shoulder. Perhaps the idea that they had been close before was not so far fetched really.
"I don't know, I think you have a fair bit of spirit yourself. I doubt anyone could make you do something you didn't want to."
He glanced down, looking almost embarrassed, almost. "True enough, but if you don't have that person to tell you what's what then you don't learn. For me, that was Prongs and his parents." He was sounding rather soppy he decided. Pretty soon he'd be singing songs about how in love with Prongs he was. Blegh!
"I guess I'm lucky then. Mum and dad were always teaching Tuni an me how to treat others. I wish she had taken the lessons more to heart." Sad crumple to her then, shoulders slumping a bit at the memory of her sister. "She an I were best friends, I don't suppose you knew that. My sister Petunia and I were inseparable until I started showing my powers. She never forgave me for being a witch and going off to Hogwarts."
Lily suddenly found herself interested in picking invisible fluff off her comforter. "That's when I met Severus, he is the one who told me about witch and wizards and magic. The first magical friend I ever had, and he was brilliant. If it hadn't been for him...I don't think I would have made it to Hogwarts. I would have given it all up to keep Tuni as my friend."
Sirius nodded with understanding. "You've got a good life now though Lil, a good future." Except for that bit he and James were trying to change. "You're a brilliant witch and an amazing woman." He let a hand rest on her shoulder, "that counts for more then anything in the world." If she were to look up she'd see a soft, comforting smile edged with sadness. Her words reminded him of Regulous, the brother he couldn't save from the pestiferous words of his family and those like them.
"I'm not sure I want to know about this future everyone else has in store for me. I want to live my life, my way." All this all of her future was frankly a bit much, she much preferred to take things as they came and not feel beholden to someone's greater plan.
The touch startled her, soft, gentle and warm, it was enough to bring a slight gasp to her lips. Lily felt a hint of sadness when she looked at Sirius. Her own hand moved, to hesitantly, softly brush along his cheek. "You're quite something too, Sirius Black. I think maybe more than I'd ever given you credit for."
