There was such a thing as "old school," there was such a thing as antique, and there was such a thing as ancient. Of course the former term hadn't existed in every day vernacular for over two hundred years ( Read more... )

Cassie wandered in to the observation deck and spotted a lone figure sitting with padd in hand. She wandered over and sat down beside the guy.

Smiling she said, "Hey what you up to?"

Donnie must have jumped at least a foot, startled at the young girl's sudden appearance and startled even more with the salutation. His eyes roved from hers to the space around him and when he was convinced she was talking to him he turned back to her and put his game on pause laying it beside him on the chair and removed his feet from the table.

A quick glance at her uniform and he nodded. "Commander," he started, more than used to higher ranks being much younger than him, "I'm just doing some...historical research."

And it wasn't a lie.

"Is there anything you needed?" As Scotty had been giving him odd jobs no doubt that was the reason she was here as well.

"No I'm just here to make conversation. And please call me Cassie." she responded trying to make the man feel more at ease.

"I love coming here to look at out there. It reminds me why I wanted the job." she said looking out the window for a moment.

"Oh," Donnie said shortly.

He glanced at her before replying. "I'm glad we're still moving or I'd be having a panic attack," he said with a chuckle. "That's not, I mean...I'd be fine. But lemme just tell ya--space simulation was not fun. Maybe if I'd had a better lunch beforehand so when I saw it all over my helmet I could remember it fondly...but...yeah, no, it's nice. The outside and..." He huffed and fingered the game he'd previously put down.

He wasn't good at small talk.

Free time tended to lead to wandering around the ship, unless she had a goal in mind. It was the best way to meet people who weren't also panicking about life-and-death situations or hyposprays. Considering the social anomaly she'd discovered on her last trip to the observation deck, over a week ago, Christine could guess that another visit might be just as … memorable.

And, ah, if it wasn’t someone she knew, sitting all alone and looking terribly engrossed in something. So engrossed, in fact, that he didn't seem to notice the click of her boot heels on the floor. Well, if he wasn't going to acknowledge her, she'd just have to think of an exciting way to greet him.

That way ended up being sneaking until she was just behind his chair, wrapping her arms around him to cover his eyes were her hands and saying, in a sing-song voice, "Guess who!"

After Carrie? Callie? Started with a C certainly. After she left he easily slipped back into his reverie. And those stupid squiggly shapes, what the hell was he supposed to do with five of them in a row? Aha, that was the shape he needed, now of he could just get it in the right...

He shot up at the combination of the physical touch and voice, turning around with wide eyes. "What the fu--!" he shouted and stopped, noticing who it was. His heart pounding in his chest he blinked. "Hi..."

He timidly picked up his PADD from the floor and smiled slowly. He raised his hand and wiggled his fingers.

"Hello, Donnie!" Christine chirped, quickly moving around to sit in the chair next to him. She eyed the PADD and his flustered expression. "I suppose this is the bit where I apologize for interupting your work?"

He tried to take a casual stance. It ended up looking strained.

"For your information I wasn't working," he said and raised his eyebrows attempting a haughty look. "I was...doing some recreational history research."

He threw the PADD on the table behind him and sat down in the chair beside her, sliding his eyes in her direction. "D'you know someone today tried to compare statistics to formulas? Psshhh. Any...interesting injuries today?"

Small talk, small talk, small talk, was echoing in his mind.
