*wakes slowly*

*blinks, waiting for coherency*

*remembers where he is, and why*

*staggers out of bed*

*goes to bathroom*

*turns on shower*

*steam fills the room*

*gets under the spray - is hot, almost too hot, but good*

*undoes the bandage on his hand*

*stares at it, hot water beating on his back*

*picks the half-formed scab off*

*watches the blood bead and pool in his palm*

*does think*

*bring palm to his mouth and tastes it*

*turns towards the shower head*

*lets the water wash the blood smear off his hand and lips*

*stands under the spray until the economy timer goes off and cuts the flow*

*stands there naked and dripping a little while longer*

*finally gets out of the shower and towels himself down*

*ignores the red blotches on the white towels*

*pulls on old sweatpants and a shirt*

*goes back into main room*

*sits down*

*idly begins to gnaw at his thumb nail*

*drifts*
