Even if Bill Watterson was kind of a crank, Calvin & Hobbes and The Far Side were some of my favorite comics as a kid.

I've been reading The 13th Element: The Sordid Tale of Murder, Fire, and Phosphorus, courtesy of jhuliaghulia. It's a fascinating history centered around phosphorus; the shift from alchemy to science, strike-anywhere matches ("lucifers"), phossy jaw, carpet bombing and murder most foul. Right now I'm reading Dispatches by Michael Herr. It's been laying around my house for years, given as a gift years ago but never quite making the transition from the shelf to my hands. You have to be in a certain mood to pick up a war correspondent's first-person account of Vietnam. But these days, that sort of book seems all too appropriate ( Read more... )
