Mr. Crepe is returning! The bad news is, it's taking the place of Someday Cafe, which will not be renewing its lease next to the Somerville Theatre.
Mr. Crepe (for those of you too young to remember the heyday of crepe-dom) was a great little hole-in-the-wall creperie that ended up losing its space when the pasta place next-door wanted to expand. For years, we combed the internet, and fed off tiny, tiny, rumors, hoping against hope that the stories that Mr. Crepe would return one day were not just pernicious lies.
I'm just a bit sad that Someday is going away - it means more overflow in the 3 other coffee shops existing on the square ( one is a Dunkin's, I know that doesn't quite count...) and a loss of a unique local hangout that dates from my college years. But I'm not that sad. It had been losing money for years, and honestly, I think that service and atmosphere were part of the problem. If there was music, it was often pretty loud, and the staff wasn't always receptive to requests to turn it down. A lot of the furniture was uncomfortable and shabby. You also had many people who would just sit and read and just have a single drink - hard to stay in business if people are taking tables for hours and a single drink. I hadn't been there in years, and except as a quick pitstop to pee on the way back from a long walk, it had ceased to exist as an actual space.
georgy, I know you played Scrabble there - looks like you may need to find another spot for that.
Rest in peace, Someday.
Love live Mr. Crepe!
