Well, chapter 166 lived up to the spoilers--which is going in another entry because I can't quite seem to stay on one topic. Oh, wait, there is a little spoiler for Fai's second curse, which is revealed in Ch. 166. Hence the cut-->
And Fei Wong Reed's curses are super-fucked up. And I'm not just saying that because they screwed with our heroes--if things had happened differently, the whole point of the journey could have stopped right there in Celes. What if Sakura had gotten trapped with Fai inside that 'world' and thereby trapped in Celes. That would kind of made it hard for Fei Wong to use the ruins because he definitely needs at least Sakura's body for the ruins to do their thing. I'm pretty sure that Sakura's body is the "key" to the ruins and also the menu of available dimensions to choose from that they want the ruins to deliver them to. This is also why I think Watanuki can also be the key to the ruins--but that's a part of the crazy story in my head.
Also, [Fai]'s body disintegrating when the Flourite stone broke open to reveal the feather contained in it and the feather returned to Sakura is strange because of what Ashura tells Fai in TRC Chapter 164, page 17:
"But you can't die."
"Because you have to revive Fai no matter what."
~ Celes Ashura-ou to Fai D. Fluorite
Why would Ashura say this to Fai when he knew that the Fluorite stone contained a feather that would go back Sakura? It is almost like Ashura is telling Fai in some sort of code that [Fai] is still alive somewhere and that the body in the pool is a fake. It makes perfect sense to me--why kill one of the magically powerful twins to guilt the other into doing what he wants when he can just create a clone--clone!Syaoran anyone?--and throw it off the tower to Yuui's feet.
Because I definitely got the impression that [Fai] was already dead when he fell from the tower--otherwise, why make [Fai] fall? If Fei Wong can get [Fai] out of the tower--which he did or else [Fai] wouldn't have fell--why not get him out alive and reunited with his brother? Yes, it probably would have been harder to manipulate the twins, but all he had to do was keep one hostage and the other would do whatever Fei Wong wanted. But it would have been even better because the twin that went on the trip wouldn't have had a death wish to be reunited with his twin--he would have had to fight, struggle and do his damnedest to finish the mission for Fei Wong so that he could get his brother released.
Wait, got ahead of myself again. Okay, so Fei Wong had the ability to get [Fai] out of the tower. For a place that magic shouldn't exist, doing that must have been quite a trick. And if he could pull off that trick, then I bet he could have done something to cushion the fall so that it wasn't fatal to [Fai]. Then Ashura could have taken both of them to Celes because, together, their magic would have been amplified enough to offset the additional magic Ashura would have had to use to transport 3 instead of 2.
Now, why didn't Fei Wong do this? Two reasons: (1) level of control and (2) motive. Fei Wong needed to give one twin an overriding reason to go on the journey[2] and do whatever was necessary to make the journey a success[1].
(1) So, to make the twin do whatever necessary to fulfill Fei Wong's plan--give him the level of control he needed over one, he had to separate them. He knew that it was torture for them to be separated--one of the reasons that they were punished as they were--so he could count on one doing any ans everything in their power to be reunited with their twin.
(2) Separating them also gave the twin the motive to do what was necessary. But because of his uber-evilness, Fei Wong only understands the negative emotions that drive someone to do go beyond their potential toward a goal. He thought that grief and guilt would be better motivators than hope and love, so he made one twin believe that he was responsible for the other's death. Then use that guilt to drive the twin toward his goal with the promise of reviving the twin as a reward. He, not understanding love, didn't realize that love alone could drive one twin to do anything for the other--he thought grief and guilt better motivators. The problem, of course, as Fai clearly showed, was that one twin would do whatever necessary to unite with the other. With one twin dead, it is only natural that the other would wish, at least in their subconscious, to join the other in death.
Now, if Fei Wong had held a living twin hostage, then the other would have done anything to be reunited with that twin and fight his absolute hardest to stay alive. After all, the only way to be reunited with your living twin is to stay alive yourself. And he could have still used guilt, manipulating the memories like he did here, making Yuui think that he chose himself to go free and left his brother alone in his prison or containment. Hell, [Fai] could still be up in that fucking tower right now and all that pain and sorrow Fai suffered would have been over a dead clone of his brother. Fuck. FUCK! That's it!
What was it Fei Wong said--only one of you can go free? What if the body of a dead twin was only a way to manipulate the other twin into doing his bidding? Because, what does Fei Wong gain by killing a twin? Nothing really. Yes, a dead twin is a great motivator, but like I pointed out earlier, so is a live one. So why not Both!?! He'd obviously been watching the twins for a long time--they had been trapped an awful-fucking-long time--long enough to make a clone of one. Then he just had to wait for the right time and offer them a chance for one to go free. Then, knowing that no matter what each choose, he could manipulate the memories of the one he let go free into making that twin think that it is his fault his twin died instead of him.
Then, he still has the other twin, trapped, where no one, even his twin or Ashura-ou, knew he was. A perfect hostage if it was required--if Fai managed to get out of Celes after the second curse--or another pawn if the first twin failed. Or, at least, he thought he had fooled Ashura-ou into thinking that the clone really was the dead body of the twin, but what if Ashura-ou knew? What if those words to Fai are telling him that he needs to seek out his twin--that his twin is somewhere he needs to be revived from.
Yup. I'm going with this theory. It is just wacky enough to fit with my other ones. And here I thought I would be talking about Chapter 166--I did, for about 3 sentences before my brain went way off into left field.
Now, because Chapter 164 of Tsubasa is so important to my little theory, I'm going to quote some dialog to help organize my thoughts better and for easier reference.
