Finally got caught up with holic (Chapter 141) and Tsubasa (Chapter 162) over this last weekend and it has been eating my brain ever since.
Questions like: (HOLiC) who is Watanuki Kimihiro really? How is he connected to both Syaoran and Sakura? Why is Sakura's separation from her body affecting Watanuki so badly?
&
(TRC) What is up with Ashura-Ou? What really happened between Yuui, Fai and Fei Wang Reed? What is up with Fai's tattoo? What is it Fai is supposed to remember when he sees Sakura's body? Why is the castle affecting Syaoran and Mokona so badly--is it the illusions Ashura-Ou is using or something else? What is Fai's second curse?
I'll talk about TRC later (
here is that entry) because I finally came up with a solution for Watanuki. I'd been thinking about it from Aug. 4th until yesterday (Aug. 9) at work I finally figured it out.
I guess I was thinking about what is connected to both Sakura & Syaoran and would account for how unique and powerful Watanuki. The Ame-whatever--the rain spirit--comments about how she still can't believe someone like Watanuki exists. The obvious solution to the connection to Sakura would be that Watanuki is a feather, but that does not explain why Watanuki is so unique and why all the spirits either want to gobble him up or love him to death. Also, him being a feather does not account for why he resembles Syaoran--at least to Sakura--nor his connection to Syaoran. Syaoran's concern about Watanuki and him possibly disappearing is on a level of his concern for Sakura. His concern about Watanuki would be appropriate if Watanuki was a feather--he is pretty passionate about Sakura's feathers--but not wanting Watanuki to disappear is at odds with him simply being a feather.
I think that Watanuki is so much more than a feather--I think he is literally made up of Sakura's memories of Syaoran.
All I could think of was: What is Yuuko doing with the memories of Syaoran that she extracted from all of Sakura's feathers?
Then I thought of Chapter 141 of HOLiC--with the birds and the young one that warns Doumeki & Watanuki to leave before the rest eat them. Everyone was trying to figure out why this bird seemed to recognize Doumeki and not Watanuki and I thought the answer obvious: the extra Egg from Tokyo--the one without spiritual power that Yuuko gave to Doumeki. I believe the young bird is what was born from that egg and since Doumeki helped give her life, she wanted to return the favour.
The Egg got me thinking about how Tokyo and how the price for one wish was used to grant another wish--the vampire blood was the price for returning the water, and the vampire blood was given to Fai to keep him alive, and the egg was the price to save Fai's life. Then I though about Sakura's Good Luck and how it was a shame that she had to lose that, but also thinking that it was a small price to save a life.
Then I realized Why Yuuko would want Sakura's Good Luck--I mean, really, what is a Dimensional Witch going to do with Good Luck? Then I smacked myself over the head--figuratively--and saw it: Himawari. Sakura's Good Luck would definitely be able to neutralize Himawari's Bad Luck. Of course, the price for that Good Luck would likely be equal to what it was paid for: saving a life or something similar. That fact that Sakura's Good Luck could be used to pay for such a big wish just reminded me how strong Sakura is and how valuable her power is--just like one of her feathers can power an entire city or create a kekkai around the Diet Building to ward off acid rain for years or preserve a soulless body.
This led me to think: what kind of power does Sakura's memories of her most precious person have? Clow called losing the memory of your most precious person a great evil, possibly the greatest evil. So, if taking those memories is a great evil, it follows that the actual memories themselves are a great good and if Sakura's normal memories have such amazing power, then what kind of power would the memories of the person she loves the most have?
Answer: the power to attract every single spiritual being--both good and bad--in range. Similar to how Hollows (from Bleach) are attracted to the strongest souls and consume them to fill the hole left where their hearts used to be, so would evil spirits be attracted to a power of pure goodness and want to consume it. Therefore, this power would need to be protected and what better way to protect it than to pair it with another pure being, this one with the power to exorcise those spirits that would do the power harm.
So, where did the price that Yuuko extracted from Syaoran and Sakura--their relationship--go? Yuuko never throws anything and many times the price she extracts from one person is what she uses to grant the wish of another. Both Clow and she knew that this journey would happen--they made the Mokona for this specific purpose--and what it would cost those going on it.
Also, the memories of Sakura are referred to as parts of her heart or her soul and by returning them to her, she is slowly becoming the person she used to be. But what of those small parts of her soul that were the price? What if those slivers of her soul, those beloved memories of Sakura and Syaoran, had such a power that they, collected into one place, became a unique soul of their own? That Sakura's and Syaoran's love, fueled with the extreme power that all of Sakura's memories have, created an entire new being: Watanuki.
Ah, I will post more later, I'm getting ready to go LARPing this weekend and have to finish gathering all my stuff.
