“This is so you’re fault.”

Bela was wet. Bela was cold. Bela was seriously pissed off. Bela was clinging to a life preserver in the middle of frigid Lake Eerie and if Dean was even contemplating blaming this on her, the minute she had a dry gun in her hand she was going to shoot him. Possibly somewhere fatal, but that wasn’t really all that likely. Maybe a knee. Oh, a knee would hurt like a bitch.

“My fault. You think this is my fault?”

“Hell yes I think this is your fault. You’re the idiot who brought the locket that the ghost wanted, on the friggin’ boat.”

“I thought it would be safe!”

“You thought it would be safe-bringing what the spirit wanted with us, holding on to it-what about that possibly strikes you as safe?!”

“Because unless a ghost is possessing someone, spirits aren’t allowed to cross over water!”

There was a long pause from the other life preserver. Bela couldn’t see him at that point, but she could tell that he was doing that thinking thing he wasn’t very good at. “Oh,” he finally said, and she could tell that this next bit was terribly hard for him to say. “You’re right.”

“Thank you,” she sighed. She didn’t want to be racking her brain right then trying to find the answer as to why the ghost had capsized their little ship. Why it had even crossed water to begin with. “The locket must be what it’s haunting. The piece of the remains that we need to get rid of.”

“Oh, well, that’s just perfect.” She could hear the sound of rubber shifting as he moved on his own life preserver, probably trying to get a better grip. “Do you still have the locket?”

“No,” she sighed. “I lost it when we capsized. But if that was what it was tethered to, we may have solved the problem anyway.”

“Because spirits can’t move through bodies of water.”

“Exactly.”

“So, great. Upside.” A beat. “Now we just have to wait for Sam to realize we’re stuck out here, come get us, and hope we don’t die of hypothermia in the process. Great. Just-great.”

There was another long pause as Bela tried to fight the shivering of her body, wanting to just cling to the life preserver and hope that eventually, Sam would get the message and come to bail them out. Before they froze to death would be nice. However, that didn’t seem to stop Dean from sticking in his own two cents one last time.

“I still think this is all your-”

“You do realize that if you intend to blame this on me, as soon as we’re on shore you’re losing an kneecap, yeah?”

“-Yeah, well, why don’t you go to hell?”

“You first.”
