001.
He remembers when it was all game and he smirks, because it all seems so childish now.

002.
Chuck probably picked the best destination to forget about Blair and as Nate tucks a tenner in her bustier, Chuck wonders why he's never been to Amsterdam before.

003.
He opens his little black book (he's always accounted for overseas expeditions) and flicks through the names lazily; nothing takes his fancy.

004.
She sends him a text message, 'I'm getting married in September. You better be there. Love, B.' he replies, but by the time he does, he's too drunk to remember what he said.

005.
Three words, eight letter, say it and I'm yours - Chuck wishes things were as simple it had been then.

006.
Chuck argues with himself senselessly - Nate tells him to shut up and that telling his reflection he's a stupid git won't change the fact that he's a stupid git.

007.
He tries to retain some contact, desperately hoping that something will happen before September the 27th to make her change her mind.

008.
Nothing does and he wonder if it's worth it to fuck up her life again just so he can be selfish.

009.
September 25th and Chuck hasn't bought a gift; does a card saying 'I love you, I want you, I need you' constitute as a present fit for a royal wedding?

010.
September 26th and Nate shows up on Chuck's doorstep at the empire clutching two suits and a frown.

011.
They board the jet and Nate and Dan and Serena can't stop talking about how lovely the summer was and it makes Chuck feel sick.

012.
'Charles,' Lily warns, 'I don't want any trouble. Blair deserves this.' He nods, smiles and passes it off with a, 'I wouldn't want anything less.' But he feels anything but.

013.
'Chuck, I'm so happy to see you. Have you seen my dress? It's a custom Valentino. I'm so happy. Dorota is just around there somewhere. Give her the gift. Oh, can you see it? I'm going to be a Princess tomorrow.'

014.
This is it, Nate texts and Chuck sits down in the pew without a word.

015.
'If anyone has any objec-...' Chuck laughs to himself; Blair would kill him.

016.
Serena laughs derisively, drunk with the adoration and attention of the papparazzi but it could also be a little champagne: 'Princesss B. Never knew she'd have a real kingdom though.'
017.
His seat is next to Charlotte Casiraghi and the young royal witters incessantly about her aspiring modelling career and her wishes to be comes an actress, Chuck's drawl of, 'Would you mind shutting up?' is lost on her.

Blair doesn't even look at him throughout the whole day and the absence of even a small smile makes his heart ache.

019.
He feels it; the feeling of drowning.

020.
The scotch tastes like water and the burn is barely noticeable over the pain.

021.
He tries to catch her eye but the room is starting to blur slightly.

022.
The waitress is sweet and gives him another drink (heavily watered down with water) and he barely notices either.

023.
Nathaniel supports Serena as she gets up to deliver a speech and Blair catches his eye for the first time that night.

024.
She looks like she's waiting for him to do something.

025.
Knight in Shining Armour? He downs another drink.

026.
Even if he could get up, he wouldn't be able to say anything but slur drunkenly and plead with her to marry him instead.

027.
Daniel does his job (as best friend/aspiring femme/closeted gay) and delivers a humour speech.

028.
Chuck is devastated and Blair smiles, pityingly.

029.
It hurts, it hurts. Fuck, it hurts.

030.
He remembers telling Louis that what he and Blair had was nothing and that he wished them well.

031.
They get up to do their first dance as husband and wife and Chuck feels the bile rise up in his throat.

032.
Nathaniel is preoccupied with Serena (who wants to dance on the table) and Dan comes to his rescue.

033.
Again.

034.
There are murmured insults but they are deflected by the ever noble Humphrey.

035.
They sit on the floor in the lobby and Dan sighs.

036.
'You still love her,' He tells him sadly.

037.
'It doesn't matter anymore, Daniel. She's someone else's now.'

038.
Dan looks so sad that Chuck gulps the whiskey hoping he'll feel less like a jerk.

039.
'Why did you give her up?" Dan asks and pulls the pitcher from him,

040.
'I didn't have a choice.'

041.
'You just got caught up in the game.'

042.
Chuck swears. 'I wanted her to be happy!'

043.
Dan shakes his head. 'You just wanted to think she was happy.'

044.
'She is happy.'

045.
Dan shakes his head. 'You know she's not. You know what you did was wrong. You let her go and yet you couldn't let go.'

046.
He makes too much sense and Chuck swears, disorientated and angry.

047.
'Fine. You'll end up drowning in the regret.'

048.
But Dan is wrong.

049.
So very wrong.

050.
Chuck has been drowning for a very long time.
