Title: Sometimes I Wish You Weren't so Far Away
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: River Song, Eleven,
Pairing: River/Eleven
Summary:  All the times the Doctor did and didn't remember River.

+

River stares at the gun in his hand and she wonders how she got here. How did things get so bad that she's now staring down the barrel in a military uniform. Her title used to mean so much. Doctor River Song. Now, somehow she feels like it's degrading and condescending. What is she doing here? How did she get here? How did she screw up everything?

"It didn't have to be like this," He tells her quietly.

"No, it didn't but it is."

"You could always help us."

But she would rather die than help them.

He watches her and then gestures to the guard to put her back in the cell. He frowns and shakes his head.

"We thought you had hope, Doctor Song."

-

Despite the melancholy situation, it cheers her slightly than she can still crack a joke without it seeming forced or ridiculous.

"Hello sweetie," She says to herself and observes her work on the rock face.

"Perfect."

And then she starts running.

-

( It's difficult in an evening dress, but she manages. Afterall, she's suffered worse pains.

Heartache is suprisingly painful. )

-

She is fifteen when she first meets the Doctor.

He stumbles into her life and she smiles and laughs and instantly the suprise of the unexpected and the draw of the unknown pull her into a life she desperately wants.
"Where do you want to go today?"
And she is completely overwhelmed with the possibility.
Then one day, he disappears.

-
She meets him again in a different time, on a different planet and he doesn't recognise her.
The sun is hot and she sighs, watching him from afar. This isn't the place to be. The music from the band flows out the doors and she stands in the garden watching the married couple dance.
Weddings.
She always imagined that one day she would be standing in Amy's place.
The Doctor cuts in and River looks away.
Even more so now that he is dancing with her.
But she was never going to be that girl.
Not when he doesn't remember anymore. Not when he doesn't remember her.

-
"Mrs Doctor?"
She laughs.
How beautifully preposterous.
"I love it."
She loves it too.
He takes her hand and kisses her cheek.
"I'll be back."
"I'll see you soon, sweetie."
She knows he won't remember her the next time he sees her. She knows.

-
"I know this doesn't mean much, really, but, just listen to me for a second?"
But she's trying to type in the coordinates before the Atraxi find them.
"This isn't really the best time, sweetie."
He grimaces and grabs her wrist.
"Stop for a second. This is important."
She turns to face him and smiles. Smiles beautifully.
"I need to tell you something."
"Go ahead."
"I lo...."
She nods, smiles and kisses him on the cheek.
"I know. I know, sweetie."

-
"God, River. You scared me."
"Good evening, Doctor."
"Evening River," He grumbles.
She laughs and flicks a switch on the Tardis.
"Where are we going?" He asks and turns the dematerialisation lever down.
"Somewhere fun, sweetie. Where else?"
He smiles and because she's piloting his ship and not him, they arrive smoothly.

-
"Doctor River Song," She introduces.
He nods. "Right. And who are you?"
She disguises the hurt in a silky smile.
"Ah, spoilers."
Spoilers.
Except they aren't.
Once he recalls their adventures, she will have forgotten them.
They will never truly be together.
She was never supposed to be the one.
She was never supposed to be the one he loved.
