Winter Chapter 4: It’s Not Over
A dazzling light blinded my sight as I opened my eyes. I covered my eyes in an attempt to block the light and let my eyes open freely. “Ryosuke” a relieved voice said. “Okaa-san?” I vaguely recognized the voice. Someone took the hand covering my eyes in theirs and I turned to see my mother, looking very tired and worried.
“Thank God you’re awake” she said. “How’d I get here?” But the moment those words came out of my mouth, all the memories came flooding back. I sat up abruptly and felt pain shoot throughout my whole body. “Ryosuke!” my mother reprimanded. “Where’s Haruka?” I asked her, ignoring the pain. My mother’s face fell. I felt my body turn cold.
“Where is she?” I asked slowly, trying to control my voice from quivering. “She’s here” she convinced me “but she’s still unconscious” she said. I felt a bit relieved hearing that Haruka was okay. “Wait, how long was I out?” “Two days” my mother replied “the doctor said that your body suffered a lot of injuries so it was normal that you’d only wake up after your body has felt enough rest.” “What’d the doctor say about Haruka’s condition?” I asked again.
“Ryosuke….you don’t need to worry” “Yamada-kun, glad to see you’re awake” a smiling nurse came inside, holding one of those clipboard things every nurse has. “Time to check your conditions then” she approached me. “I’ll go tell your father you’re awake” my mother gave a reassuring pat on the shoulder and left the room..My gaze followed her out the door.
“Yama-chan! Good to see you up!” Yuto walked in with Chinen. “Kore, omiyage. The others wanted to come too but Johnny-san didn’t allow all of us to ditch practice” He laughed. I smiled, but Haruka was still unconscious, although my mom finally said that she just suffered a small head injury, I couldn’t get my mind off it. Chinen seemd to have sensed that something was troubling me and spoke up “Haruka-chan nara daijoubu yo…” he in an attempt to comfort me. I let out a sigh and changed the topic. “How’s the media taking this?”
Yuto looked up from the magazine he was scanning and shared a look with Chinen. “Well…” Chinen hesitated. “The media is all over it, but don’t worry, none of the articles are out of the real story.” “Hm…” “Yama-chan, who actually attacked you?” Yuto said in worry “I think we need to report to the police” he added. I stared at him in deep thought “Yeah….yeah you’re right…” “It’s that Tanaka Yukihiro guy isn’t it?” Chinen said and I turned to him. “……Yes..” “I thought so…maa, we better report as soon as possible.” He said. “I can’t thank you guys enough..” they just smiled in response.
A knock came on the door and Haruka’s mom peeked in. “Ryosuke-kun?” I perked up “Yes, Auntie, what is it?” She walked inside and walked towards me, giving a slight nod towards my friends as she did so. “Ha-“ “I came in to tell you that Haruka just woke up” I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding “Yokatta~” the word slipped out of my mouth and Natsuki-san smiled at my reaction.
“I really have to thank you for standing up against Tanaka Yukihiro…Haruka was in so much pain after she left you but she kept lying to all of us, kept saying she was alright…I don’t know what triggered her to call you on Christmas, but I’m glad you came..” “Even though she got hurt?” I said weakly “I couldn’t protect her, I…I---“ “Ryosuke-kun….from my point of view, Yukihiro might’ve done things that are even worse to Haruka if she never had the courage to contact you again..he was waiting for the right time…” I felt a chill down my spine just thinking about it and Natsuki-san smiled at me and nodded “Well, the doctor said Haruka will be fine after a few days rest now that she’s up” she said cheerfully “And since you won’t seem to be out by then, I have to make sure Haruka checks on you. Get well soon, Ryosuke-kun” she gave my hand a ‘thank you’ grip and left the room.
“Ne Yama-chan, I think we’ll leave for now as well, we better go report to the police. And since you seem much more relieved, you look like you can have a good rest. Jaa na” “Thanks you guys”. They patted my shoulder and left.
Things are okay for now, but as long as Yukihiro is still on the loose I can’t keep my guard down. But I stared
at my bandaged arms and legs as that thought crossed my mind and found that I was useless right now. Hh…I just hope the police can act fast.
It’s not over just yet.
