happiness comes in a box

No, seriously. It's been an awesome week.

I got these, one after the other - Angela on Monday, and Clover and Tsubasa yesterday (I didn't even know Tsubasa was out, but I saw an ad for it in the new issue of Newtype - also part of what made this week great: KOBATO!!!! - and found it at work <3). I watched a little of Angela's concert, but it was awkward watching it in my brother's room (he has the only compatible DVD player) so I'm just going to steal it later and watch them in my room. I didn't watch Clover at all (;-; I want to...), but I did get a chance to watch the Tsubasa dub.

Okay, so it wasn't horrible. Really. Monica Rial isn't as terrible a Sakura as I feared, but nobody can capture the pure innocence of Yui Makino's voice, and, oddly enough, even though I didn't anticipate Syaoran's voice being a big deal, and his VA isn't bad at all, I missed Miyu's voice, too. Both he and Yui have an innocence in their voices that lends a lot to their characters - Monica and Syaoran's VA aren't bad at all, but neither of them sound as innocent as the seiyuu, so I felt like Sakura and Syaoran as characters lost some of that purity. lol, or I'm just weird. ^^; I dunno, I guess I thought of Japanese Sakura and Syaoran more as preteens with a sweet, innocent love (innocent meaning sex hasn't even crossed their minds) where as dubbed!SakuSyao seem more like normal teenagers with normal crushes (meaning I wouldn't trust Syaoran not to cop a feel of unconscious Sakura...). Again, I'm also weird.

Oddly enough, where I was first sort of terrified about Fye, Vic's dub of him was easily my favorite of the show. He's nowhere near as cocky-sounding as he sounds as Ed or Dark or Webber, in fact, I think he sounds a little too subdued as Fye. He hasn't really used much of Fye's sing-song happy-go-lucky tone, so Fye as a character seems more somber. Even when he was teasing Kurogane (btw, they compromised on the nickname thing - there was one American-ish nickname, "Kurgie" ><", and then "Kuropuu" and "Kuropon", I think. I was wondering how they'd translate that, since even the manga had a side note about Fye's nicknames...) Anyway, even when he was teasing Kurogane, he still sounded a little less sing-y than he did in the Japanese. Still, I liked Vic's dub, he did a pretty good job (he'd be perfect for cold, post-eye-loss vamp!Fye).

Kurogane sounded like a slightly less rough Piccolo. It wasn't...terrible, and I guess it was roughly the English equivelent of his Japanese voice, but I kinda wanted Kuro-rin to sound "cooler". Like Shogo *.* Shogo's voice is awesome! *swoon*

Mokona is a Tachikoma. And that's about as close as you're gonna get to an American Mokona voice *shrug* Not much of a suprise. Yuuko was so-so. She was appropriately serious, but I wonder how Colleen is going to handle drunken-tease-y-playful-Yuuko in the Holic anime series. Watanuki said approximately one word, so I dunno about him. I was disappointed, though! They didn't get Tony Oliver to play Sorata, and I was SO looking forward to that ;-; Instead, he's played by Jerry Jewell, Kyo in Furuba and Jimmy Kudo in case closed. I like him, but I miss Tony Oliver-Sorata <3 Fei Wong Reed was appropriately creepy, though.

Truthfully, the only thing that makes me twitchy is how they pronounce Kuro-pons name. KURO-gunay, emphasis on the "Kuro", the rest like an afterthought. It's supposed to be "Kuro-gon-e", right? That isn't just my imagination? But everyone does it! Yuuko, Fye, Tomoyo. ;-; It's annoying! And Syaoran is "Syao-ron", emphasis on the "ron". And Yuuko absolutely butchered Watanuki's name, I can't recall specifically how she pronounced it, but OMG WTF. Please tell me that's now how they're going to pronounce it in the Holic anime. Please. Can't they just listen to the Japanese version and try, just a little, to pronounce it that way? PLEASE? They also were a little off with Yukito (YuKEYto), but he's not in it much, so I don't really care. Also, I understand *why* they did it, showing closeness and all, but Sakura calling Syaoran "Syao" = kind of annoying. *sighs* What's wrong with using honorifics in a dub? Especially the common ones like "kun" and "san". I know they can be a little confusing, but it's easy enough to slip a little explanation in there, and it prevents the "Syao"s. ;-; Anyway, really, aside from that, it was a pretty good dub. Just...the pronunciations...*sigh*

Also, I was disappointed with the lack of Syaoran's desperate "PLEASE SAVE SAKURA-HIME" line. That was so classic in both the anime and manga! But now it's something way less desperate-sounding, like "She's a princess, please save her!" I know they have the mouth movements to consider, but it's such a mouthful to be saying at a desperate time!

Now I'm eagerly awaiting the Outo arc. I wanna know what they do with my beloved insert songs :X

Also, started watching Hana Yori Dango (anime and drama. so far, drama > anime) and Haibane Renmei. I really like both so far, Haibane Renmei is cute (and intriguing), and HYD is amusing.

I also read a little bit of Suki. Dakara Suki. again. Reading even a volume of that reminds me how much I absolutely adore Hina-chan. She's so cute and sweet and sincere and absolutely pure-minded. Hinata is officially my hero. That series is so cute, it's one of those CLAMP works that gives me warm fuzzies and makes me smile like an idiot. I demand an OVA.

Oh, yes, and one last thing - Itoshii Hito e by Sachi Tainaka, the ED song to Seirei no Moribito. Somebody build the fanlisting, please! It's so pretty <3

Speaking of which, APPROVAL FOR MASANE/RIHOKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *tailwagx1000* DAMN YOU ANIKEI FOR NOT CARRYING EP13. DAMN YOU TO HELL!
