back to school and it's kind of exciting, kind of "hmmmmm" this semester.
here's the line up...
american lit, honors- is being taught by g.m. burton (cool name at least) who is the director of the honors program, which is just a little intimidating. i think his class will be pretty interesting and the man definitely has a lot to say... american literature on the whole isn't exceptionally exciting, but the text seems decent. and when prof. burton asks if there are any questions and no one speaks up, he makes his eyes really wide like half-dollars and looks around the room-- i don't know if this is just a goofy mannerism or if he's trying to read our minds, but it's entertaining either way.
american history II, honors - ahh, dr.lee, lover of gap, starbucks, UT, pop culture studies, wi-fi, and, apparently, musicals. not a fan of cell phones in class... that's okay, neither am i. he will potentially be my most interesting teacher this semester.
at least i have a friend in the honors program to make fun of the other honors kids with now ; )
cultural anthropology- this is a big class with a more signature "SAC" crowd filling in the seats--i got spoiled on small honors classes so this one makes me a bit antsy. i don't really like people sitting behind me, but i feel like i have to be at the front of the classroom to get anything out of it. dr.smith, however, is at least fun to watch. he is really tall and skinny with thin wooden soldier features, and his combined shape, slouchy posture, and tilty movements make him very much resemble one of those little dolls that comes on a round stand who's joints are all connected by little elastic strings, and when you push the button on the bottom of the stand, they collapse into a pile of limbs and torso and head, but when you let go of the button, they pop back erect again. does anyone know what i'm talking about?!
swimming- this is a beginers class (the intermediate one got canceled) but i figured we'd just be learning a variety of basic strokes and doing laps and maybe a little conditioning and diving...but it turns out this is a class that is for people who are deathly afraid of the water and need to learn how to first float, then paddle...so i am hoping the coach just lets me do my own thing in the deep end while everyone is else working up the courage to stick their face in the water. interestingly, i have a female coach is more masculine than 3/4 of my male profs...
music theory- thursday nights, and i hope it picks up. tonight we "learned" the notes on the staff (treble and bass) and dismissed an hour and a half early. i asked if we were at least going to go over the circle of fifths and the self-promoting jazz-playing teach said 'sure we will, in a couple of weeks...so maybe i'll get some extracurricular reading done in that class, at least to start with.
piano lessons- just a half hour private lesson, but i think my progress will be stronger than in just a piano class, and my teach, who is pretty cool, seemed excited to have me. je suis aimee!
my french class got canceled : /
okay, enough of academia--and if anyone ever knows some1 who needs prof. recommendations @ sac, you can ask me--i probably know them all by now!
oh, additional rant: why the fuch are text books so ungodly expensive?! for right now i'm checking out most of my books from the library reserve desk (but you have to stay in the building and can only check out for a max of 2 hrs) until some e-bay prospects come through or i get my book check a week from tomorrow. blah.
k, goodnight.
