To my vague sadness, I've discovered that last winter killed all my love for snow. So I'm less than impressed with the, ooh, call it five inches or so currently gracing Derby city centre. I was supposed to be going down to Kent today, but there's no chance- trains in and out of London and North Kent are all knackered. No new nephew and Abi-hugs for me!

Instead, I'm listening to ancient human instinct and stocking up my cupboards before staying home and not moving much. Tomorrow is going to involve and early morning trip to Tesco, my handbag stuffed with shopping bags. I doubt there'll be bread, but I have flour, yeast, and a breadmaker all ready to go.

Speaking of random impulses, I wish I drank in any great quantity, since the overwhelming urge to make hot buttered brandy is starting to gnaw at me. Brandy, butter, sugar, pudding spices. It smells and tastes like liquid fruit cake, but it's not really worth making it for one person.

Still, it's not all bad. I have candles, banana-choc pastry slices*, my very favourite Aardvark called me last night, and I'm keeping warm by dancing round rather embarrassingly to Professor Elemental's latest album, the Indifference Engine.

*Roll out leftover pastry, spread with Nutella, roll around a leftover banana and eggy wash before baking.
