reference librarian fail

Mar 03, 2010 14:48

I have to get this off my chest, and I refuse to apologize for this.

So for my Reference class, we have to do these random questions posited by the professor - one of this week's options was on the Acehnese / Javanese identity conflict that turned nasty. We need to have a print source and an electronic source, just like the other questions. Okay, no problem, let's go hunting in the Southeast Asian stuff and see what we dig up. Easy, right?

I went to post my group's answers just now, and discovered that we weren't the first group to post. The first group, however, directed the "student" asking the question to JSTOR.

Yeah. JSTOR. The database that every fucking undergrad uses for everything.

Fucking JSTOR.

This is the best reference you could find? WAY TO FAIL, FUTURE LIBRARIANS.

A blind monkey on crack could find JSTOR and use it. It's by far the easiest way out I've seen on one of these questions - and it's not nearly the best source. Jesus balls, people, try to give a damn!

(And no, I'm not just saying this because I waded through German, Dutch and Indonesian-language sources for a while. IT'S FUCKING JSTOR, PEOPLE.)

annoyances, school, shitty things happen, bitching, ugh
