As a teacher of adolescents, which I've been doing for the better part of 10 years, I can honestly tell you that it does get better. As with all things, it has its ups and downs - and some crops of students are more challenging than others. In time, I've found, you learn to gain a balance in this profession of "human beings."

Trust me, wanting to go home after a long, tiring day of being around human beings all day and veggin' in front of of a TV doesn't make you a bad teacher. It means you're human.

Think about it... you're dealing with human beings all day long. Humans [regardless of age] are emotional critters - meaning that, you are surround by other peoples emotions for 7+ hours a day, all while having to keep your own emotions in check. Emotions require energy - the fact that you go home exhausted on a daily basis means you're doing your job - remarkably well, I might add. For.. would you want your own child to be with an individual who was cold, emotionless, uncaring?

When I leave work every day, I ask myself: "Did I have a positive influence on a child's life today?" As long as I can answer yes, I know I am doing the right thing - regardless of how tired I am, or how much some parent is an idiot, or whether some kid has annoyed me to the point of wanting to spank 'em. Children need teachers who are willing to be in the trenches while helping them to become better human beings. Our job isn't just about teaching "skills"... it's about teaching life.

Smile. A child loves you. :-)
