Jae's Monthly Drabble Challenge #44

Oct 05, 2009 20:27

The first weekend of October has...well, come and gone, but you know the drill. *laughs* In honor of Halloween, the prompt for October's Monthly Drabble Challenge is "You don't scare me." Feel free to combine it with other prompts if you wish.

As a note of general interest, I don't mind if anyone wants to write another pairing or even another fandom for JMDC prompts. I can't promise I'll read them, but I'll thank you and put you in the drawing.

Please post your entry in your own journal (unlocked!), or a community of your choice, and leave me a link in comments below. Longer fics and artwork are always welcome, as are drabbles and poetry. You have until Monday, October 19, at 11:00pm CST to submit an entry (I'll be out of town that weekend). At that time, I'll post links to the entries and draw a name from among the participants to receive a drabble from me. Below is my entry for this month:

Summary: A familiar taunt changes over the years.

"Scared, Potter?"

Harry rolled his eyes at the familiar taunt and the memories it brought back, beginning with two brash, twelve year old boys.

Over the intervening years, that phrase had popped up between Harry and Draco Malfoy on several occasions. There had been the night Harry had flown them to safety from the Fiendfyre in the Room of Requirement. Once he had landed his broom, he had announced he needed to leave to fight the Dark Lord.

"Scared, Potter?" Malfoy had asked. Gone was his trademark sneer, however. Rather, his tone had been subdued and his expression earnest.

Harry had hesitated before answering honestly. "Yeah, I am."

On the first day of Auror training, Malfoy had bumped Harry with his shoulder in passing and taunted, "Scared, Potter?"

Harry had snorted in response and held his tongue.

Being partnered with one another on their first assignment had brought a whispered, "Scared, Potter?" as they had prepared to burst into the residence of a known criminal.

"A little," Harry had admitted. "You?"

"No," Malfoy had replied. "Not when I have you backing me up." He had moved away before Harry could argue about who was backing up whom.

The first time Harry ended up in St Mungo's with serious injuries from a mission gone wrong, a cool hand had covered his own and given it a squeeze.

"Scared, Potter?" Malfoy had asked, voice tight with worry.

"No, not any more," Harry had answered, eyes growing heavy from the potions he'd been dosed with.

Their first kiss had been memorable. Draco had drawn close to Harry and paused with their lips a breath apart. "Scared, Potter?" he had husked.

Harry had grabbed the back of Draco's head and crushed their mouths together by way of response.

A few weeks later, they had been on the verge of their first shag. "Scared, Potter?" Draco had teased.

"I'm scared you won't follow through, you ponce," Harry had growled, moving to join their bodies.

Harry could vividly recall when it had been Draco lying in a bed in St Mungo's after a botched assignment. "Scared, Potter?" he had rasped.

"Fuck yes, I'm scared," Harry had snarled. "Don't you dare leave me."

"Wouldn't...wouldn't dream of it," Draco had slurred before exhaustion had overtaken him.

Once Draco had recovered, they had decided to go public with their relationship. The setting they had chosen was a Ministry ball that all Aurors were expected to attend. Draco had suggested they simply join the other couples on the dance floor, but Harry had hesitated. "Scared, Potter?" Draco had murmured.

Harry's chin had lifted at the challenge. "Let's do this," he had declared, taking Draco's hand and leading him onto the floor.

And now, Draco had thrown the gauntlet again. He was smiling, but Harry could see that Draco's jaw was clenched with tension, and he could swear he saw a flicker of fear in Draco's eyes. Harry had never loved him more.

"You don't scare me," Harry grinned. "In answer to your second question, no, I'm not. In regards to your first question," he continued, accepting the gold ring that Draco was holding out to him, "the answer is yes."
