Jae's Monthly Drabble Challenge # 218: Taking Care of His Partner

Apr 07, 2024 14:27

This is not the Spring I ordered. I'm returning it for a refund. Zero stars.

This month's JMDC prompt is hard truth(s). Use it however it inspires you. Feel free to write/draw any fandom, pairing, threesome, gen fic, original fic, etc. Combine it with other prompts, if you're able.

Please post your entry in your own journal (unlocked!) or a community of your choice, and leave me a link in the comments below. You have until April 30 at 10:00pm CST to submit an entry. At that time, I'll post links to the entries and draw a name from among the participants to receive a drabble from me.

Below is my entry for this month:

dove_drabbles Prompt No. 126 - Feel free to be yourself
Summary: Dee is down and out, and Ryo makes him some soup.

Ryo stood at the stove, warming a pot of chicken noodle soup. It was what his Aunt Elena always fed him when he was feeling under the weather. Ryo was feeling fine, but Dee was laid low by a nasty cold.

Ryo smiled as he stirred. A year ago, had someone told him he'd be living with and taking care of his partner, and that they would be partners in every sense of the world, Ryo wouldn't have believed it. Yet here he was, making soup in an effort to help Dee feel better. Ryo certainly felt better than he had last year--happier, more settled, and all because he'd finally accepted some hard truths about himself.

He wondered what his parents would think. Ryo liked to believe they would have approved. After all, his mother was always fond of telling him, 'Feel free to be yourself.' They had wanted nothing for him but happiness, and he was very happy indeed.

A loud sneeze from the bedroom pulled Ryo from his musings. He turned off the stove, ladled some soup into a bowl, and put it on a tray with glass of water, utensils, a napkin, and a fresh box of tissues. Ryo made his careful way to the bedroom and set the tray on the bedside table. All he could see was a mound under the blankets and a black mop sticking out at the top.

"Dee, I brought you some chicken noodle soup."

Dee's face slowly emerged, watery eyes, reddened nose, and all. He sat up and coughed, holding a crumpled tissue to his face and conscientiously using hand sanitizer before he touched anything else.

"Thanks, babe," he mumbled. "You're too good to me." He leaned back against the headboard, and Ryo settled the tray across his lap.

When Dee noticed that Ryo was hovering, he frowned a little. "Stop with the mother hen routine," he scolded. "I can feed myself, and you don't wanna spend any more time in here than you have to. Don't want you gettin' sick, too."

"Okay," said Ryo, reaching to brush a lock of hair from Dee's forehead. "Just call out when you're done or if you need something."

"My throat hurts; I may text ya instead."

Ryo chuckled. "That'll work." He turned to leave, pulling door behind him although he left it slightly ajar. Ryo walked into the kitchen, intent on having some soup, too. He paused and wrinkled his nose.

"Achoo!"
