I barely had time to brace myself before Spartacus leaped at me. I caught him in my arms and staggered back a step. "Oof. Why couldn't you be a mummy ferret?"
Spartacus responded with a croaking meow.
I plucked a strand of long blond hair from his claws. "Were you snuggling with Nik? Shit. You didn't actually kill him, did you? I was kidding about that."
Niko emerged from the darkened hallway and went to the fridge for a bottle of water.
"Damn, Cyrano, what happened?" I asked him. "You look like rabid squirrels have been nesting in your hair."
