Summary: Harry and Neville prepare to explore the Black Lake.

The following morning, Neville asked Pansy to accompany him to the edge of the lake to gather some gillyweed. Meanwhile, Harry and Dean carried the painting of the Black Lake out to the shore and began searching for the part of the lake that was represented in the portrait. Seamus and Draco accompanied them, while Hermione and Blaise repaired to the library for any reference material that would aid their cause. When Ginny and Luna offered their assistance, Ron stayed nearby to protect Ginny from Blaise, and Greg hovered close to Ron to protect him from anything else. It would have been comical, if the situation weren't so dire.

"This looks like the spot," said Dean, eyes going from the painting to the view in front of him and back again.

"The shoreline does appear the same," Draco added.

Harry and Seamus agreed with the other two, and Draco drew his wand and conjured a red ribbon around a nearby tree.

"That will help us find this site again easily," he said. "I take it you plan to go into the water in the same approximate place as the mermaid did?"

Harry nodded. "That's the plan, yes."

"I don't like it," said Draco.

"It could be dangerous, mate," Seamus opined.

"I've done it before and survived," shrugged Harry. "Besides, Neville and I will go on a reconnaissance mission first, to see if there's any sign of the mermaid. Unless we find her, there isn't much more we can do."

"My basket is full," said Pansy as Neville dumped another handful of gillyweed in the basket Pansy was holding.

"Let's head back to the castle then," Neville said. He paused when Pansy gently tugged his sleeve.

"You have a dab of mud on your nose," Pansy told him. Cheeks blooming with a faint blush, she reached out and swiped the spot away with the tip of her finger.

Neville felt his own face heat with a flush. "Th-thanks," he stammered, staring into Pansy's eyes. Her pupils expanded, and her lips parted on a sigh. Neville leaned closer, slowly, so as not to startle her.

Pansy swayed nearer, the basket tipping precariously on her arm. A crow's mocking caw caused them to step back nervously, unable to meet one another's eyes.

"The others are waiting," Pansy murmured, turning to head in the direction of Hogwarts.

"Yeah, I reckon they are," said Neville, falling into step behind her.

"There are real merfolk in the lake," Hermione said, pointing to a picture in one of the books she had selected. "They are considered harmless unless provoked."

"It's the grindylows we need to be concerned with," Blaise remarked, scanning the page before him. "They're nasty little buggers."

"Harry had trouble with them in Fourth year," said Ron.

"They can take radishes with them," Luna offered. "Grindylows don't like radishes. That's why I wear radish earrings."

"Riiight," drawled Ron, giving Hermione a look.

"Luna may be on to something," Blaise said. "This passage states that grindylows are repelled by root vegetables such as turnips, carrots and radishes."

"Let me see that," Hermione frowned, pulling Blaise's book toward her to read. "Interesting," she hummed.

"Tomorrow, Neville and I will dive into the lake, from the approximate position in the painting," said Harry. "This will be a reconnaissance mission only," he emphasized, taking in Pansy's pale face and Hermione's worried expression.

"And you'll take turnips with you," Greg added, nodding to himself.

"Er, right," said Harry. Privately, he wasn't sold on the root vegetables theory, but Hermione and Blaise seemed to believe in it, and Greg was insistent on it. Harry wasn't going to cross his hulking housemate.

"What will you do if you don't find the mermaid?" asked Hermione.

"We'll resurface and consider our options," said Neville.

"And if you do find her?" Hermione prodded.

"We'll resurface and consider our options," Harry replied with a grin.

"Why don't I believe that?" Pansy murmured.

"Because Harry is reckless?" suggested Seamus.

"Brave to the point of being foolhardy?" added Dean.

"Oi!" protested Harry.

"The rest of you can relax," Neville said firmly. "I'll make sure Harry doesn't take any foolish risks. No matter what we find, we'll return to discuss it with the rest of you."

Harry wasn't looking forward to a dip in the Black Lake. A chill lingered in the water, and he couldn't help but recall his previous run in with grindylows. At least this time, he would be working with someone instead of competing against others. Harry glanced at Neville and saw his friend in earnest conversation with Pansy. The sight of them together caused Harry to automatically seek Draco out to gauge his reaction. Draco, however, was looking at Harry. He smiled when he caught Harry's eye and approached him.

"Be careful down there," said Draco. "I wouldn't want something to happen to our fearless leader."

"Please," scoffed Harry. "You just don't want to find yourself rooming with Blaise again."

"He is quite slovenly at times," Draco commented, a spark of humor lighting his eyes. Just as quickly as it had come, it was gone, and Draco grew serious once more. "I mean it, Harry," he said. "Be careful."

Harry stepped closer and lowered his voice. "If I make it back alive, will you reward me with a kiss?"

Draco's eyes flared with heat, and a mischievous grin quirked his lips. "I reckon you'll have to come back alive to find out."
