Summary: Draco and Harry care for their hedgies.
Draco stuck his trowel in the dirt and paused to wipe his brow. Digging worms was hard work.
"You got dirt on your face."
Draco's hand froze in horror until his companion laughed. "Wanker," he muttered, giving Harry's shoulder a shove.
"You should have seen your expression!" crowed Harry, still chuckling.
A reluctant grin tugged at Draco's mouth. Who would have ever thought he'd be sitting in the dirt outside of the castle with Harry Potter while digging for worms? However, Draco and Harry had become good friends recently as they bonded over the care of the hedgehog that Harry had given Draco on a lark. Draco had quickly become enamored of his new pet and named it Merlin. He'd had no idea Merlin was a female until she went into labor. Once the babies had been weaned, Draco had given them away, and he had made sure that Harry received one.
"I think we have enough worms for the hedgies now," Harry remarked. He got to his feet and dusted off the seat of his jeans.
Draco's eyes were drawn to his friend's arse, and a blush heated his cheeks at the inappropriate direction of his thoughts. Although they had shared one sweet kiss when Draco had first given Harry a baby hedgehog, Harry had seemed content to keep things platonic between them ever since. Stifling a sigh of disappointment, Draco got to his feet and picked up the bucket of worms. Harry gathered the trowels, and they headed back to the castle.

Harry accompanied Draco down to the Slytherin Common Room, where they delivered worms to Pansy so she could feed her hedgie, Guinevere. She thanked them and shot Draco a wink as soon as Harry's back was turned. Draco blushed again. Pansy kept trying to convince him to make a move on Harry, but Draco was reluctant to risk the friendship he'd developed with the other boy.
They went to Draco's dorm room and found Gregory there. He was sitting on his bed with his hedgehog and giggling in a rather shrill and girlish manner as the small animal snuffled his neck.
"We brought some worms for Louis," Draco told him.
Greg accepted some wriggling worms. "Thanks, Draco, Harry," he beamed at them.
It never failed to amaze Draco that his grim and hulking companion could be reduced to a grinning idiot by something as innocuous as an ordinary hedgehog. Draco moved to Merlin's cage and removed his beloved pet. Harry helped Draco feed Merlin, and he stayed long enough to play with her.
"I should get going," Harry announced eventually. "I need to feed Godric and give Hermione some worms for Aristotle."
"Merlin and I will see you to the door," Draco offered, ignoring Nott's sarcastic snort. Draco would enjoy nothing more than giving his fellow Slytherin a pet basilisk. He and Harry left the dorm room and walked through the portrait hole. "So, ah, thank you for helping me tonight," Draco stammered shyly.
"It was fun," Harry smiled in return.
Draco cleared his throat. "Do you...um...would you like to go out with me on Thursday night? To dig worms, I mean," he blurted at the end.
"I'd love to," Harry replied. He leaned forward and bumped noses with Draco before pressing their lips together in a brief, awkward kiss. Harry stepped back with a charming blush coloring his cheeks. Straightening his glasses, he said, "It's a date."
