Summary: Harry goes to pick out a kitten.

It had taken a lot of pleading on Harry's part, but Draco had eventually given in and agreed that he could get a kitten. Harry bypassed the pet store in favor of visiting the local animal shelter, instead. There, he encountered nearly a dozen homeless kittens, and he settled down to observe them in their large, communal cage so he could make his choice. His eyes were drawn again and again to a rambunctious ginger male, and Harry grinned at the thought that the kitten would make Draco think of Weasleys every time he saw it.

Calling one of the volunteer workers over, Harry pointed out which one he wanted, and the young woman opened the cage and pulled the kitten out, handing him to Harry. Harry laughed as the kitten clambered up his chest and began batting at the buttons on his shirt. As he turned to leave with his new kitten, a piteous meow from the cage behind him caused Harry to look back. He saw a small, calico kitten pressed against the front of the cage with her ears drooping miserably. "What's wrong with her?" he asked.

The woman smiled fondly at the kitten and replied, "Oh, she's just a shy and needy sort, and the kitten you have is the last of her siblings to go. She'll have to learn to manage on her own now."

Harry remembered how it felt to be all alone in the world.

"Draco! I'm home!" called Harry. His boyfriend was seated at one end of the sofa, legs tucked up beneath him, thumbing through a potions book. Noting the cardboard box with holes and handles that the shelter had provided Harry, he sighed and said, "Well, let's see the little blighter."

Harry grinned and set the box down, then reached in and plucked out the orange kitten, depositing him in Draco's lap.

"Merciful Merlin, he looks like a Weasley!" exclaimed Draco, staring in horror at the ginger kitten.

"I knew you'd like him," replied Harry. He laughed as Draco's foot moved, prompting the kitten to attack.

"Aaack!" cried Draco, prying the little monster loose and setting him on the floor, where he immediately dashed off to explore. Draco turned to scowl at Harry. "Why couldn't you choose a calm, quiet one?" he demanded.

Harry rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I did, actually," he said. Reaching once more into the box, he drew out the calico kitten and set her on Draco's lap. She burrowed into the crook of Draco's arm and hid there, trembling.

"Two kittens, Potter?" Draco glared at him.

"I couldn't leave her behind, Draco," blurted Harry. "She cried when I took the orange one...they're brother and sister, you see...and she was so sad and lonely..."

As he spoke, Draco scowled and picked the kitten up, holding her at eye level. She was mostly white, with orange and black spots along her back and odd markings on her face. "You look like a harlequin," he muttered to her.

Meow, she agreed, and then she purred.

Draco's heart melted, and he cuddled the comical kitten close. "You can have Weasley over there," he told Harry, indicating the ginger kitten, who appeared on the verge of climbing the curtains. "Harlequin is mine."
