In 1990, I broke each of my arms. One on Labor Day. The other on Christmas day. Bike accidents. With the first break, I was able to be active and still ride my bike and play and whatnot. The second break was a whole different ballgame. I was in a lot pain. They were unable to cast it as it was right below my shoulder. I was in a sling for almost 12 weeks. To make matters worse, some angry nurse twisted my arm before it was set and so it wasn't healing correctly. I couldn't move my arm in any direction. I even had to have physical therapy. So I basically sat at home for half a year. I started gaining weight. Over the next year, I became quite a chubby little kid. But by summer of 92, I was ready to get back to pre-accident emily. Started swimming twice a week at the college and whenever I could at my grandma's. Riding my bike 6-8 miles a day. Running in my neighborhood. I lost 40lbs in 3 months. And I stayed active until 1995.
I was playing soccer and someone stole the ball from me. I turned to chase the ball and my knee stayed where it was. My poor knee has never been the same. A trainer told me I had likely torn something but I am petrified of surgery so I just learned to deal with the aches and pains and sometimes the giving out of it. I basically had to learn to walk so that I was putting the least amount of pressure on it that I could.
Now I want to do a triathlon. I started training a little (and I do mean a little) this weekend. My knee is killing me today. It's my left knee and when I run I push off my right and land on my left so i'm trying to teach myself to do the opposite. Which is harder than you'd think. I didn't even bother with my bike. I haven't ridden it in 15 yrs. It's been in my parents basement so it's probably ok but I think i'm going to just get a new one. I saw a bicycle shop in Trussville yesterday. It's on Hwy 11 and I think it's called Cahaba Cycle or something like that. Has anyone had an experience with them. i'm wondering if they would be good to buy a bike from.
The biking and running I can push through. But the swimming is going to kill me. i've never been a distance swimmer. i'm not really a strong swimmer to begin with. But I found a triathlon in Scottsboro in Sept. There's also one in Tuscaloosa. I don't think i'll be ready by then but I wanted to get an idea of what i'd be doing. The one in Scottsboro breaks down like this:
Swim- 400 meters
Bike- 15 miles
Run- 3.1 miles
Whenever i'm trying to comprehend a distance, I tend to break it down into something I know. So I figured out 400 meters is approx the length of 4.37 football fields. I don't know how i'm going to do that. And that's the lesser of the two triathlons. The other is the equivalent of 8.2 football fields. I guess I better start working on my shoulders so they can handle it. Anybody who is a good swimmer that has any suggestions is welcome to pass them my way.
Also, I know some of you are/were athletes and if you know of a good knee brace that will stay put, let me know.
