Prologue -
Blood. So much blood. Red seemed to be their colour. It was everywhere. Jack coughed as he fought for meaningless breath.
There was a high pitched screech and the voice came back on the intercom, the same one that had been torturing them, testing them, for what seemed like an eternity.
“They say that just before you die your life flashes before your eyes. Well, you would know” sick laughter filled the Hub over the intercom, “What about them?”.
“What do you want?”, Jack screamed to the empty room, “We’ve done nothing”.
“Oh, you’ve done everything”, the voice turned bitter, “All those lives that ended in pain and torment. That was your doing”.
Jack sobbed, his tears stinging the cuts on his cheeks.
“You’ve killed so many, sacrificed all those lives. Well, now it’s time for you to pay”.
“Leave them alone”, he yelled, “Take me!”.
“No”, there was muffled shuffling, “They pay for you. The price you never can”.
Jack clenched his steadying hands, “I’ll do anything”.
“Like I’ve said, you’ve done enough. Anyway, Captain, this is out of your control now”.
“Do you want money? Weapons? What?”.
The voice carried on, ignoring the broken pleading man, “Every life has an end”.
“No”.
“It’s time for you to meet your sacrifice” the muffled sounds filled the Hub again, the sound deafening, “Say hello pretty”.
Jack stood slowly, “Who is that?”.
“Jack?”, came a wavering voice.
Jack closed his eyes, “Ianto”.
“Jack, don’t do anything. It’s ok, he’s just-”
There was a bang and a painful groan that made Jack cringe.
“Ianto!”.
“Sorry about that”, the man sounded cheerful, “Chatty one, isn’t he?”.
“You bastard!”, Jack spat out.
There was a chuckle “Now, now, Captain”.
“What do you want from me?”, Jack whimpered.
“Nothing but to see you hurt”.
“I am hurting”, he yelled.
“Oh, my boy, this is only the beginning”, the sound of exhaling made the coms crackle, “Now, you have no weapons, no communications and pretty much no time. How fast can you run?”.
The voice disappeared. The com had gone dead.
