I am taking a few world relgions class and have taken a particular interest in religion/spirituality/faith...whatever you want to call it. It sparked up a few years back when my mom made a comment about all the religions coming from the same source yet having being translated, interpreted, or passed on differently. I have a class that in a way analyzes that. Today we are going over Christianity and we get into a conversation. This involves the renissance era, the reformation, and the enlightenment periods. A student spoke up about the enlightenment period saying its when we start thinking logically and not being ruled by faith and by people who think they know whats best..we find out the "truth". I was not bothered by this at all. This led another student to inform the class of the fact that true and false is just a matter of percetion. My true may be your false. There was a comment made where the student that spoke up about the enlightenment period muttered under his breath something along the lines of "there is no way you can prove evolution doesn't exist". I plan on commenting back when I get a chance but to me..in this forum that was the most pigheaded selfish thing to say. The reason for this class is for us to try and find a connection, a synthesis between peoples ideas so we can live in peace yet this kid wants to make a statement says there is no way you can prove it doesnt exist. There is always a way..just like there is never a time when we as humans will know everything. I am not trying to say evolution doesnt exist but its so insignificant to our times. If people keep sticking to their guns and not realizing that nothing is certain that IT WONT MATTER IF EVOLUTION IS HOW WE CAME ABOUT BECAUSE IN THE END WE WONT EXIST.
I worked at a camp this summer and a kid revealed to me that he finds that their is no purpose for religion and that all it does is cause disharmony rather than fix it. This kid is 14 or 15 years old by the way. Studying religion and looking at mankind as a whole (as we all should because we are all connected somehow and no person is an island) I see many factors of why religion is something that can be beneficial to mankind. It gives people hope, it allows people the means to have some sort of foundation in life, it puts a proposal in place that says hey we need to get along--the golden rule. The fucked up thing is that people are so sought after proving their religion is the greatest and most correct that arguments and drama is started. To me religion is a buffer for things not to spill over at times but other times I truly think its what keeps us together. Religion in a sense doesnt have to be monotheistic thought but anything that makes things make sense--but when we try to impose things on other people that just hypocritical espeacially from the people who claim they are rational beings. Go watch the south park episode on when cartman gets stuck in the future because of his insistance on not having to wait for a nintendo wii.
