Marsh closed the door as quietly as he could. He turned, sighing. Lori stirred on the couch.
"What time is it?" she said, eyes adjusting to the moonlight shining through the window.
"It's late. Go to bed, I'll be up there in a bit."
She nodded and sleepily complied, setting the book she fell asleep to on the table. he lazily trudged up the stairs a little while after she did. It had been a long day and night.
He picked up his pajama pants off the edge of the bed and then shut himself into the bathroom. He unbuttoned his shirt and slid off his pants, disposing them both in the hamper. He turned on the water, splashing some on his face, washing away his guilt in hopes Lori wouldn’t suspect.
His phone buzzed in a circle on the sink, echoing off the ceramic tile walls. He quickly picked it up, opened it and pressed it to his ear.
"Hello?"
The voice on the other end then spoke and when Marsh spoke again, it caught Lori's attention.
A couple minutes later, Marsh emerged from the bathroom, lounge pants, slippers and a white t-shirt covered his body. Lori was pacing.
"Who was on the phone?" She said and brought a fist to her mouth, looking at Marsh.
"Are you-"
"Answer the question, Marsh. Who was on the phone?" She said, held back emotion trying to show.
"It was the studio."
"The studio? A building called you?"
"No. What I meant was, uh, Bill called me from the studio."
"Bill was at the studio?"
"Yep." He nodded.
"Bill's 70+ years old, and you expect him to be at the studio well into the night? I don't think so." Slowly, she eased her self onto the bed. "Who was on the phone?"
"Lori I-" He tried to rest a hand on her back but she stood up and walked away from him, back turned.
"Who is she, Marsh?"
"It's not-"
"The walls are paper thin in that bathroom-" She nearly shouted and then lowered her voice. "I heard everything."
"Lori, we-"
"you have two wonderful daughters that you love. You have me who loves you probably more than humanly possible. And yet you think you need another woman to please? For her to please you? Is that why? Don't you love me anymore?"
"Honey- I do love you, I just-"
"How can you say that?! Honey I love you." She mocked. "Is that supposed to make me feel better about my husband cheating?"
"Lori- if you'll let me say something-"
"I think you had enough time to talk." She wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her shirt. "Where'd you meet her?"
Marsh sighed. "At a concert."
"Why her?"
"There was something there that felt right between us. But we didn't-" he paused.
"Didn't what? I need to know."
We didn’t see each other for a while but a couple years ago, we came into contact again."
"A couple YEARS?"
"I wanted to tell you. We both did. But one thing led to another and we knew we were in too deep to go back."
"so this has been going on for a while. All those late nights I thought you were at the studio. That was just-"
"no. We were at the studio. We were just there after everyone else had left."
"Is it Em?" she said, sighing. "You two always got along so well."
"No. It's- it's not Em. She's great but all she does is take my picture."
"Who is she? If it's not Em, who is it?"
He sat down beside Lori and took her hands. "Before I tell you, I want you to know that I love you, so much, and I never wanted to hurt you."
She looked at her hands in his and then up to eyes, which were glistening with tears.
"Okay. Um- you remember when me and Wes-" HE paused and took a deep breath. "When we did the Give It Away video?"
"Yeah?" She said, cocking her head.
"Yeah, and everyone said we were 'meant for each other' because of our stage presence, how we sang- our personalities?"
The look on Lori's face quickly changed from confused to disgust.
"Wait." She stood up, making hand gestures and laughing in disbelief.
"You're cheating on me- with a guy?!"
Marsh looked up, tears begging to fall. "I love him."
"This is too much." She said and started putting handfuls of clothes into a duffel bag. "I'm going to my sister's early. I don't want to see you tomorrow, I don't wanna look at your face, I don't want to hear what you have to say. I'll call my mom and have her pick up the girls in the morning."
Marsh put his head down and the tears fell.
Notes: The funny thing is that this song is sung by people, I found a couple weeks after I wrote the story, that are part of the Gaither family, they are in two of the Gaither videos. Kind of awesome and ironic on my part…
I handed this in for an English assignment and the teacher said something along the lines of “I started reading this and thought it was a good story and then, WHOA, he’s dating a GUY?!” It was a highlight of my high school career.
