Thoughts on SPN 7.10

What a crappy week. Crap-PY. Blech, blech, and blech.

Oh, hello, Show.

SPOILERS under the cut.

7.10: Death's Door

Holy shit, Show.

I didn't think you'd go there. I honestly did not. The real emotional wallop wasn't to be 7.02. It was this. And oh, how it lurked, waiting to spring on us with all of its magnificence while we suffered through insipid episode after insipid episode!

I would say that I'm incredibly proud of Show right now, but I'm waiting to see how Show follows up on this to pass judgment.

Bloody brilliant, yaar. I love the concept - coma!Bobby walking into memory after memory, getting Rufus's help (RUFUS!! \o/), the reaper "in his custard" and OH GOD. So much backstory. So much awesomeness. I was riveted. (well, mostly, but I'm not in the mood for criticism right now)

"They're MY boys." That last memory. Bobby looking at them with tears in his eyes, such fondness. Rip my heart out and stamp on it, why don't you.

Sam and Dean. Oh, Sam and Dean. What are they going to do?!

(Also: Sam consciously pressing against that scar. Hallucifer must be loudest in this especially vulnerable moment, and I love the quick, subtle acknowledgment of that.)

I love the very mechanics of the dream-scape in coma!Bobby's head: that, as more of his brain dies a somatic death, so does the scope of his dream-scape. Gah, lovely. It's beautiful in its simplicity.

I don't want to speculate what's going to happen to Bobby - because, hey, if they're still going to keep him alive some way after all of this... no. Just, no. Also, I'm incredibly excited to see how the Winchesters will deal with this, how the dynamics of the show itself will change. Because Bobby's loss is HUGE in terms of SPN. Bigger than Castiel's.

A brilliant, brilliant way to leave us. It's SPN as l best love it: these awesome complex characters, a whole lot of emotion, family, angst, with gentle touches of humour and friendship.
