So I found out today The Thermals are breaking up.
I discovered this band by accident about eleven years ago and was immediately, deeply, in love. When I write, I often blast The Thermals when I'm finished for the day, or blast them to get me in the mood to write. Or, often, I just blast them. I loved their punk pop, I loved the simple make up of the music, I loved how much fun they seemed to be having.
I'm not surprised they broke up, though. Their last album-Desperate Ground--a concept album about someone who was mentally ill--seemed to not sell many copies. It still had that distinctive Thermals sound, it still was power pop, but it was a dark album, and that rarely sells. I loved the fuck out of it. But I'm always the kiss of death. If I like something, you know no one else will.
I'm running out of favourite, still existing bands. I still have Alvvays, I think Metric is still around, and I still have Best Coast. And that's about it. The joys of getting old is seeing all the things you love slowly fade away, I guess.
