Small Comfort In Dark Times

Nov 29, 2017 19:57

It was colder today, but it still doesn't feel like November. The animals are confused. Nothing in the non-human world knows what to do. Humans, of course, just say how awesome everything is and get drunk.

No writing in a long while. Work is long and very stressful, and when I get home I just want to sleep. Work is even crawling into the weekends, so even taking a Saturday or Sunday off makes me feel guilty, even after a regular work week. Hello, I am a cog in a machine. I have become Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times, pulled back and forth between the gears.

I finished reading Marie Lu's Warcross. It was a YA novel about a plucky hacker who gets pulled into the thrill a minute world of Warcross, which is a game that takes over the world's imagination moreso than anything ever before. It reminded me of a much leaner and better executed Ready Player One, but without the Eighties adoration. I enjoyed it, even if I'm forty years past the intended market.

Still making my way through Dragonball. I now know that a moment in Scott Pilgrim was a DB homage (Scott looking up at the first evil boyfriend falling through the air towards him, and he goes "What do I do?"--it's a nod to Goku doing the same thing when Piccolo leaps at him). I finished Season 2 of Penny Dreadful, and am loathe to finish off the series now. Season 2 was so well done. I love Eva Green. She carries a series that is already filled with wonderful actors. And the script. I love it when dark things are allowed to be dark.

Game wise, I finished the main story of Yakuza Kiwami. I loved that game, and dawdled through it for forty hours before finally finishing it. I'm now playing Assasin's Creed: Syndicate, which aims higher than it seems to have time to reach. It's still fun, but there's jank that should have been cleared up. I've also started Final Fantasy 13 again, and subscribed to the Final Fantasy MMO. I've tired of Warcraft a bit, and really should have just stayed with Guild Wars 2, but I was lured once again to the beauty of that game.

After a long day, I just want pretty things and wonder.

yakuza, dragonball, final fantasy, penny dreadful, tired
