an update of almost everything

Oh flist, I have been as close to sleepwalking through this week as possible while still remembering to like, buy groceries and drive to work.  At least I have the slight excuse of a cold, but those were my accomplishments.    o_O

To report: it's been a week since I came home from San Francisco and it was completely fabulous, not just for the ( Read more... )

I'm also so glad you had a good time in San Francisco, not to mention jealous because dude, I'd love to go there! It looks awesome and yes, verrrry pretty.

AND OMG ALSO RIVER. I totally agree with you about the ending, which is difficult because if not for those last five minutes it would be a thing of beauty, but also...there's this part of me that's glad she's not dead and glad the Doctor was that desperate to save her. So mostly I either don't think about it and assume she did die, or I think about the fact that OBVIOUSLY if he went to that much trouble to save her consciousness, his future self is GOING BACK TO GET HER OUT.

Some of my thoughts about my coping strategy (essentially co-opting the myth/fairy tale logic of Moffat's Who to argue that this is River's journey through the lands of the dead, because the enemy is not death, it is stasis) here and I don't think there's spoilers for the finale:

I'm also going to be SO, SO interested in your thoughts after the finale, because I don't want to overstate it but it really is a thing of beauty in terms of the way the thematics and character arcs pay off. Most of the people I've watched fall in love with this season - whatever their level of investment prior to it, have paused and gone wow and loved it even more after seeing the end. Even if they were spoiled already, it's...not the same as seeing it.

I will be honest, the two-parter you're about to watch is my least favourite part of the whole season - others are kinder about it, but I actually thought it was actively bad in parts and felt mostly bad for the spoilery thing you mention because that deserved to be in a much better episode than it was. However, the episodes after that are a good run up to the finale.

In conclusion: RIVER.

ETA: Oh, forgot to mention, if you like (well, "like") the Weeping Angels, the Moffatt-written episode "Blink" from season three is really, really good, and even scarier and freakier than these eps. And has the bonus of being extremely standalone and basically a giant Doctor-lite episode wherein David Tennant mostly appears as a DVD easter egg, and instead the whole thing is about a character we've never met before played by Carey Mulligan.

So so pretty! (I am not contemplating how to make oodles more money and afford to live there. Not. at. all. :)

RIVER.

I know! I can't actually wish for her to have died, even if I would have been ok with it had it actually happened that way? But I am hoping it's all a set-up for something EVEN MORE AMAZING, and the fact that Steven Moffat really seems to enjoy writing her character gives me hope. (I actually mostly enjoyed Tennant's Doctor in these too.) And I will be checking out your thoughts after I make my way through the rest of this episode. :)

*is too excited* No, I'm not really loving the two parter-for all that I want to like Nasareen. Notice how I still haven't finished and it's been over a day? Slooowly. But I think every single person I know watching the show has loved the end, and my flist at least has close enough opinions that I can't really imagine not loving it. Especially if it pays off everything

I've seen Blink, and I think the special place it holds in my mind was responsible for a lot of preemptive terror when watching these episodes! ;) One way or another I've seen most of Tennat's episodes, since I only officially stopped attempting to catch up when I heard about Donna's ending and decided it wasn't worth me falling in love with the character to deal with it. But Blink is one of my faaaaavorites, even if I don't know when I'll watch it again, eep. And again I kind of liked Tennant's Easter Egg too, he's like a clock the strikes right about once per season for me. :p
